ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Hurricane Clair gets some big-time class relief in Saturday’s $100,000 La Prevoyante Stakes at Woodbine and should be favored. The question is, will she be able to control the pace in the 1 1/16-mile test for Ontario-sired females, as is her wont? A 4-year-old trained by Marty Drexler, Hurricane Clair has stuck to graded stakes company since airing in a July 13 conditioned allowance/optional claimer by 8 3/4 lengths with a career-high 95 Beyer Speed Figure. After fading to seventh in the Grade 1 E.P. Taylor in August, she was an encouraging second to the favored champion Caitlinhergrtness in the Grade 3 Ontario Matron going 1 1/16 miles on the Tapeta on Sept. 13. Hurricane Clair has missed the board in her last two outings, the Grade 2 Dance Smartly on the inner turf and going 1 1/4 miles in the Grade 3 Maple Leaf on the Tapeta. A shorter route is more suitable for her, and jockey Eswan Flores can put her on point in a field with little other speed. “She’s great right now,” said Drexler, who is removing blinkers from her equipment. “Finally got the right kind of a race for her.” Ella It Is and Hint are meeting older stakes rivals for the first time after running one-two in the Nov. 21 Ashbridges Bay Stakes for Ontario-sired 3-year-old fillies. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The Mark Casse-trained Ella It Is awaited room along the inside on the far turn in the 1 1/16-mile Ashbridges Bay before Pietro Moran angled her outside to mow down Hint late to land her first stakes. “She’s pretty easy going,” Moran said. “She can do whatever you want. She won on the lead earlier this year with me and off the pace now. She’s just a sweetheart, nice to ride. I was just sitting on a ton of horse. She did the rest.” Fresh off a maiden score, Hint set a tepid pace in her third start and first around two turns. She finished a clear second while beaten 1 1/4 lengths, much to the delight of trainer Gail Cox. “As we had thought when we looked at the race, there was no speed at all,” Cox said. “She went extremely slow through the opening fractions, but I think for an inexperienced horse, it is a hard way to run – to be on the lead the whole way and then be a target. But I was very happy with the race and the ride.” Completing the La Prevoyante lineup are My Girl Sky, Secret Load, War Painter, Madam Gwen, and Speedy Freeze, who was supplemented. ◗ There will be a mandatory payout on the 20-cent Jackpot Hi 5 in Saturday’s 10th and final race. The carryover is $269,656, and the total pool is expected to exceed $1 million. The first-level allowance with a $32,000-$30,000 claiming option attracted 10 fillies and mares. Sinclairity, Home for a Rest, Why Em Sea Ay, and Give Me the Boots are among the protagonists in the six-furlong sprint. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
