ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Favored Hurricane Clair went straight to the front and never looked back to win Saturday’s $100,000 La Prevoyante Stakes with authority at Woodbine. Over a track that was favoring inside/speed, Hurricane Clair set honest fractions under Eswan Flores on a cold afternoon with a strong west wind. Hint took up the chase in second in the 1 1/16-mile event before War Painter loomed into contention on the far turn. Hurricane Clair ($3.80) drew away in the stretch to prevail by 3 3/4 lengths, in a time of 1:45.27. War Painter held off a closing Secret Load to secure second by a neck. Ella It Is, Speedy Freeze, Madam Gwen, Hint and My Girl Sky completed the field of Ontario-sired females. Trainer Marty Drexler removed the blinkers from Hurricane Clair for the race, which the 4-year-old’s third stakes success and fifth career score. “The only reason we put them on to begin with was she had [some] gate issues and it seems to focus her,” Drexler said. “We kept them on and it seems like on the front end, it didn’t matter, but when she got behind horses, she always got a little bit keen. She doesn’t use them in the morning. She doesn’t use them to breeze, so I figured she might as well go [without them].” A daughter of Silent Name, Hurricane Clair earned $60,000 for owner David Rowbotham and his partners. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
