OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The well-traveled Hoist the Gold, winner of Saturday’s Grade 2, $500,000 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct, will be considered for a trip to the Middle East and the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 24, trainer Dallas Stewart said Sunday. While Hoist the Gold has yet to run 1 1/8 miles - the distance of the Saudi Cup - the fact the race is run around one turn plus the large purse makes it a race worth considering, Stewart said. “The one turn seems more appealing, that looks like his style, we’ll continue to have some conversations about it,” Stewart said. “Basically, we’d be leaning that way.” A selection committee based in Saudi Arabia would have to deem Hoist the Gold worthy of a starting berth in the Saudi Cup, but he has won two Grade 2 stakes in his last three starts. In October, he won the Grade 2 Phoenix at Keeneland before a sixth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. :: Bet with the Best! In Saturday’s Cigar Mile, Hoist the Gold took advantage of a speed-favoring surface and a heady ride by John Velazquez to win by 4 1/2 lengths. His final time of 1:34.28 for the mile resulted in a career-best 109 Beyer Speed Figure. Stewart said the way Hoist the Gold finished the race and galloped out afterward, an extra furlong shouldn’t be an issue. “He couldn’t pull him up. he just kept on going,” Stewart said. “He doesn’t have an issue with the one turn.” Hoist the Gold has kept on going for the last 18 months. Since July 2022, Hoist the Gold has made 17 starts at 10 different tracks. He’s made four trips to Southern California. “The horse travels great, his appetite and the way he travels is unbelievable,” Stewart said. Stewart said Hoist the Gold would head from New York to Versailles, Ky., and spend at least a week at Rebecca Maker’s Equine and Rehab facility before joining him at Fair Grounds in New Orleans. Meanwhile, Cigar Mile runner-up Senor Buscador, who rallied from 11 1/2 lengths back to finish second, 4 1/4 lengths clear of Castle Chaos, will soon head to Gulfstream Park and point to the $3 million Pegasus at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 27. As has been the case in several of his races this year, Senor Buscador couldn’t overcome a speed-favoring track, yet still ran “exceptional” according to his trainer Todd Fincher. Senor Buscador was also hampered by a speed-favoring Santa Anita surface when he finished third to Slow Down Andy in the Grade 1 Awesome Again in September. “Hoist the Gold ran great and took advantage of that bias,” Fincher wrote in a text. “Very proud of Buscador. One day he’ll get a fair track and we’ll all get to see his abilities, hopefully.” Dr B targets Barbara Fritchie Dr B, who on Saturday won the Grade 3 Go For Wand Stakes for a second consecutive year, will be pointed to the $200,000 Barbara Fritchie Handicap at Laurel Park on Feb. 17, part-owner Chuck Zacney said Sunday. Zacney said Dr B could make a start once beforehand depending on what’s available in January. Aqueduct typically runs the Interborough Stakes, at seven furlongs, in mid-January. “We’re shooting for the Barbara Fritchie and talk about possibly breeding her after that,” Zacney said. Dr B, a 5-year-old daughter of Liam’s Map, has a record of 6-7-2 from 22 starts and has earned $583,240. She earned an 86 Beyer Speed Figure for her victory. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
