In the $100,000 Manitoba Derby at Assiniboia Downs on Aug. 1, Great Escape set the pace and his stablemate Red Knobs sat just off him before taking control in the stretch. The roles were reversed in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Century Mile on Saturday, when Great Escape gave trainer Robertino Diodoro his fourth win in the 1 1/4-mile race. Great Escape posted a track-record time of 2:01.35 and paid $7.30 for his 3 1/2-length victory over Red Knobs. With Rico Walcott aboard, Great Escape was a length behind Red Knobs after a fast half-mile time of 45.35 seconds. He moved to within a half-length at the six-furlong mark, 1:09.53, took over the lead at the quarter-pole and drew off late to win decisively. Red Knobs tired late, but was able to hold off Regal Riot, who rallied to finish a half-length behind in third.   “I was a bit concerned about how fast they were going early, but was pretty confident when they turned for home,” Diodoro said. “Robertino didn’t give me any instructions, but I wanted to sit just off my stablemate like the way we worked the other day and I had to be patient,” Wacott said. “It worked out just the way I thought it would.” :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.
