Go Google Yourself, fourth behind a trio of Grade 1 winners in her previous start, found the company far more to her liking Sunday when dominating the $125,000 Groupie Doll Stakes, the annual showcase event at Ellis Park in western Kentucky. Always prominent under Brian Hernandez Jr., Go Google Yourself put away Divine Queen after straightening for home in the one-mile race and was not threatened thereafter, finishing in 1:36.43 over a fast track. She returned $6.80. Divine Queen held well to be second, three lengths behind the winner and another 6 1/2 lengths before Moonlit Garden, who had no mishap as the 7-10 favorite in a field of six fillies and mares. Jockey Tyler Baze was unseated at the break by My Mertie, but neither he nor the 7-year-old mare were injured. The victory was the first in a stakes, and the fifth overall, from 16 starts for Go Google Yourself, a 4-year-old bred and owned by the Jay Em Ess Stable of Samantha Siegel. In her last race, the June 15 Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs, the home base of trainer Paul McGee, the daughter of Into Mischief finished behind Elate, Blue Prize, and She’s a Julie, all Grade 1 winners. “She made a good move in the Fleur de Lis and just couldn’t run down a real nice group,” said McGee. “It’s great to win a stakes with her.” This was the first running of the Groupie Doll since it was downgraded from the Grade 3 ranking it had held for nearly 30 years. The race had been known as the Gardenia since its 1982 inaugural until being renamed in 2015. The $2 exacta (4-1) paid $25.60, the $1 trifecta (4-1-5) returned $20.60, and the 10-cent superfecta (4-1-5-3) was worth $8.39. Gray Magician ($5) wins Ellis Derby One race later, Gray Magician ran much better than his last start in Kentucky when finally getting the best of front-running Knicks Go in the $100,000 Ellis Park Derby, also run out of the clubhouse “elbow” chute at one mile. Corey Lanerie was aboard Gray Magician for trainer Peter Miller. Last of 19 in the May 3 Kentucky Derby, Gray Magician prevailed by a neck over Knicks Go when finishing in 1:36.19. The winner paid $5 as favorite in a field reduced from 10 to seven 3-year-olds following three early scratches. Gray Magician, a gray colt by Graydar, is owned by Eclipse Thoroughbreds, Gary Barber, and Wachtel Stable. He finished second behind Mr. Money in the July 15 Indiana Derby in his lone interim start following the Kentucky Derby. Super Steed, making his first start since February, finished sixth as the 5-2 second choice.
