SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The connections of Roses for Debra will have to wait another day to try and avenge her narrow defeat to Future Is Now in last month’s Grade 2 Intercontinental Stakes. Roses for Debra, last year’s Caress winner who was beaten a head in the Intercontinental, was forced to scratch from Thursday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Caress Stakes after spiking a fever earlier in the week, according to trainer Christophe Clement. Her scratch allows Star Guest, a 4-year-old Great Britain-bred filly owned by Godolphin Racing and trained by Charlie Appleby to draw into the 5 1/2-furlong turf stakes. Clement will still have a runner in the field in Dontlookbackatall who won the License Fee at Aqueduct in May and a Pennsylvania-bred stakes at Parx in June. :: Gain a competitive edge at Saratoga with DRF's premier handicapping data — purchase our meet packages today and bet with confidence. “It is definitely a bit more ambitious, but it’s time to be ambitious,” Clement said. Dontlookbackatall, at 1-5, only won the Power By Far Stakes at Parx by three-quarters of a length. “It was a bit of a question mark on the turf course that day,” Clement said. “It was more like a dirt course than a turf course.” Future Is Now won the The Very One at Pimlico before doing all the dirty work and still holding off Roses for Debra in the Intercontinental. Trainer Mike Trombetta said the fact Future Is Now can now be effective sitting off horses makes her more dangerous. “Paco [Lopez] gave me the best news ever when he rode her at Pimlico,” Trombetta said. “He said this filly is very rateable, she’ll run at a horse. In her prior races she was a need the lead type so for someone to come back with that kind of feedback she’s now a better horse and running faster numbers.” Kaufymaker set solid fractions and was just passed late by Future Is Now and Roses for Debra in the Intercontinental. She figures to be forward again Thursday under Luis Saez. Among the newcomers to this group is Zeitlos, a 4-year-old daughter of Curlin who has won four of five starts this year, all on dirt. Zeitlos ran second in her lone turf try, that being at Kentucky Downs last fall. Trainer Steve Asmussen entered Zeitlos for turf in an allowance at Churchill Downs on May 24, but the race was switched to dirt and she won by a half-length. Zeitlos is by Curlin out of the mare Thyme for Roses, a Group 2 winner on turf in Australia. Zeitlos is a half-sister to Ms McWhinney, who won two turf races this spring at Santa Anita. “Her style, her pedigree, her one race on the turf, I love her chances,” Asmussen said. “She had success this spring on the dirt at Oaklawn and she was there because of the purses. Tried to get her on the turf at Churchill and it came off and obviously if it came off the turf again we would definitely play.” Forecasted rain for Wednesday and Thursday never materialized so the Caress was scheduled to be run over firm ground. Danse Macabre, second in last summer’s Bolton Landing here, has finished first or second in nine of 10 starts. She is making her first start since a runner-up finish in the Autumn Days at Aqueduct last November. Secret Money beat Danse Macabre in the Grade 3 Music City at Kentucky Downs last summer and is back in this field. Star Guest, a daughter of Dubawi, will be making her U.S. debut in the Caress. She has been training steadily on the dirt, including a bullet five-furlong dirt breeze on July 20. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
