OPELOUSAS, La. – The first 2-year-old stakes action of the season at Evangeline Downs is set for Saturday night with the two divisions of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity. Both drew full fields of 12, with an additional two also-eligibles in the fillies’ division. Formerly run as the Cajun Futurity and the Southwest Futurity, the Shine has been run every season in the 49 years of racing at Evangeline Downs. Each division will be worth $100,000 and will be contested at 5 1/2 furlongs. Heading up the fillies’ division (race 8) is Joy of the Saints. The easiest of winners at first asking at Louisiana Downs on May 17, Joy of the Saints is by Saint Afleet and out of the Etbauer mare Joyful Gal. Her winning 70 Beyer Speed Figure is 19 points better than any of her rivals have posted. Joy of the Saints is a graduate of the 2013 Breeders Sales Co. of Louisiana yearling sale, where she fetched a modest $5,700. Owned by Poindexter Thoroughbreds and trained by Ronnie Ward, she once again will be ridden by Filemon Rodriguez. The best hope of the locally based fillies appears to be Our Bloomin Rose. Also a winner of her only start, the daughter of Half Ours dueled early in her 4 1/2-furlong debut before quickly stepping clear when asked by leading rider Diego Saenz late in the turn. She cruised home 2 1/2 lengths the best to win with something left. Third-place finisher Miss Molly B, who also is entered in the Shine, came back to flatter Our Bloomin Rose with a win of her own June 11. Saenz has the return call on Our Bloomin Rose for leading trainer Karl Broberg. Salute the C rates as the one to beat in the males’ division of the Shine, which goes as race 10. Trained by Steve Flint, the gelded son of Salute the Sarge looked professional in graduating at first asking May 24, when he contested the early pace before edging clear late under a hand ride by veteran Gerard Melancon. Salute the C has continued to turn heads in the mornings between starts, posting a pair of strong works at the nearby Evangeline Training Center. The latest, a five-furlong breeze in 59 seconds last Saturday, was the fastest of 12 moves at the distance. Melancon retains the mount and will break the likely favorite from the advantageous rail post. Another Louisiana Downs-based runner will journey down Interstate 49 for the three-hour drive, as Smudge will be shooting for his second career win. The Sarah Delany charge has posted back-to-back Beyers in the low 70s, narrowly missing in maiden special weight company May 29 as the favorite before making amends June 20 with a popular 4 1/2-length score. Kevin Smith will once again handle the riding chores. Others of note in the colts-and-geldings division include Union Builder, a half-brother to multiple stakes winner and $667,390 earner Little Ms Protocol who is trained by Pat Devereux; Strong Currency, a front-running maiden winner trained by Devereux; Adios West, last seen winning at Churchill Downs for the powerful Steve Asmussen stable; and recent maiden victors Nathan’s Kiss and Streak Afleet. Also on Saturday evening’s program is a $40,000 overnight stakes (race 9) for 3-year-olds and up at a mile on turf. It will feature a rematch of recent Louisiana Legends Turf winner Skipberry Wine and third-place finisher and odds-on favorite Benwill.
