ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Bold Script, last year’s champion juvenile filly in Canada, will get back on the turf in search of her first victory of the season in Sunday’s $125,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes for Ontario-bred 3-year-old fillies for one-mile on the E. P. Taylor Turf Course at Woodbine. Bold Script returned from a brief layoff to run second in the La Lorgnette Stakes on Tapeta in her most recent start on Sept. 1. That was her first race since her runner-up finish in the Bison City Stakes on June 30. She’s also finished second in the Woodbine Oaks on June 8 and was third in the Grade 3 Selene Stakes in May. Trainer Stu Simon said he wanted to give Bold Script a break following the Bison City Stakes to gear her up for a fall campaign. “We just wanted to take a step back and freshen her up and start over again,” he said. “I just thought she ran a really good race off of the layoff and hopefully she moves forward some more now.” Bold Script began her career on the turf last season as a 2-year old, and will make her first start on the grass since a runner-up finish behind Avie’s Flatter in the Cup and Saucer Stakes against males last October. She was also third in the Grade 1 Natalma Stakes as part of her Sovereign Award-winning campaign. Simon said Bold Script hasn’t had an opportunity to race on turf since last fall because she was being pointed to the Woodbine Oaks on Tapeta. “It just led us to a different path heading to the Oaks this spring, but she certainly enjoys the turf also,” he said. Bold Script’s main threat is Intanga Rose, who will be making her turf debut. The daughter of Animal Kingdom comes off a runner-up finish in the Duchess Stakes over seven furlongs on Tapeta on Aug. 3. She breezed five furlongs on the turf training track here in 1:00.80 last Sunday. Western Curl won an allowance sprint over six furlongs on the turf in her last start on July 27, and figures to be a contender with Rafael Hernandez taking over in the irons for Patrick Husbands, who will ride Bold Script. Trainers Kevin Attard and Tony Gattellaro will both send out a pair of horses to round out the Ontario Damsel field. The Attard contingent includes Amalfi Coast and Dream On Jilly, while Gattellaro will saddle Miss Ariel and Weed Be Happy. The other stakes on the Sunday card is the $100,000 Bull Page Stakes for Ontario-sired 2-year-old colts and geldings. The likely favorite is Meyer, who graduated two starts back before running second to Keep On Truckin in the Clarendon. Rockcrest is unbeaten in two career starts. He won a maiden race July 28 before doubling up in the Simcoe Stakes for local yearling sale graduates on Aug. 28. Norseman Racing Stable will send out a pair of debut winners, Red Giveaway and Red Fiction. Each won his debut by more than four lengths. Rounding out the field is Dealmaker, who is still a maiden.
