OPELOUSAS, La. – Union Builder, the winner of the males’ division of the D.S. "Shine" Young Futurity, looked well on his way to a Shine-Louisiana Cup double of his own Saturday after opening up a commanding lead in midstretch of the Louisiana Cup Juvenile only to be mowed down in the final strides by a hard-charging Four Leaf Chief. Both juveniles are based at Evangeline. “He had to overcome a lot the other afternoon,” said Four Leaf Chief’s winning rider, Gerard Melancon. “He got pounded at the start and still came running. He is a nice colt.” Four Leaf Chief also staged a willing rally in winning his only other start, a five-furlong maiden special affair on grass at Evangeline on July 10. Melancon also was aboard for that victory. “He just does everything right, just a professional,” Melancon said. “I also think he is just crying out for more ground. Plus, he is such a good-looking colt.” Melancon said the $75,000 Sunday Silence over the Louisiana Downs turf on Super Derby Day is likely to be Four Leaf Chief’s next start.
