AUBURN, Wash. – Fooled Again will try to keep his perfect record intact Sunday when he starts as the likely favorite in the $50,000 Coca-Cola Handicap at Emerald Downs. A one-mile test for 3-year-old colts and geldings, the Coca-Cola attracted nine entrants, including the top four finishers in the recent Auburn Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs. Fooled Again is 2 for 2, building upon his April maiden victory with a $19 upset in the Auburn on May 24, when he rallied from midpack to prevail by 1 1/4 lengths and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 78. Fooled Again will start from the No. 6 post. Jockey Juan Gutierrez has the mount for trainer Howard Belvoir. Gloria’s Angelo, who closed with a rush to finish second in the Auburn, drew the inside post. O B Harbor, fourth in the Auburn after pressing a suicidal pace, will start from the far outside. The most pressing issue for handicappers: What to do with Prime Engine, who captured his two starts at Emerald last year with consummate ease but stopped badly in his first start of 2015? Prime Engine finished sixth as the even-money favorite in the Auburn, 8 1/2 lengths behind Fooled Again. With a fast pace likely, Fooled Again could get a favorable setup, tracking the leaders down the backstretch from a few lengths off the pace. There’s no guarantee that his late kick will have the same punch at a mile that it did at six and 6 1/2 furlongs, but it’s easy to imagine Fooled Again being in a commanding position turning for home. :: Bet the Coca-Cola Handicap with DRF Bets. Thetrailerguy (Last 3 Beyers: 71-63-58) ◗ Owner Heidi Nelson paid $75,000 for Thetrailerguy at the 2014 Ocala Breeders’ Sales Co. June sale in Florida. So far, so good: Thetrailerguy has won 2 of 3 starts for trainer Monique Snowden, with each start better than the last. Prime Engine (Last 3 Beyers: 58-50-67) ◗ A $110,000 Keeneland September yearling, Prime Engine posted an 83 Beyer in his 2-year-old debut last September and came back 15 days later to take the demanding Gottstein Futurity at 1 1/16 miles. ◗ Jerry Hollendorfer thought so much of Prime Engine that the trainer took him to Delta Downs for the Grade 3 Delta Jackpot in November. Prime Engine finished a distant eighth after setting a brutally fast pace. He is now trained by Michael Puhich.
