Trainer Todd Fincher swept the four stakes Tuesday at Sunland Park, led by the $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby with Henry Q and the $75,000 Island Fashion with Flying Connection. Overall, the trainer won six races on the card, which was expanded to 13 races to accommodate the four stakes that were canceled at the hands of high winds Sunday. Fincher’s run included the $100,000 Red Hedeman in a photo with Thruthestorm and the $100,000 Dominguez Memorial with veteran Cheese Tray.   “It was an unbelievable day,” Fincher said. Fincher said he has won six races on a card once before, during futurity trials about 10 years ago at Ruidoso Downs. He won six of seven trials, which were for Thoroughbreds. “The purses were small,” Fincher said. “Today, all four stakes, that was pretty cool.” Henry Q ($3.60) established himself as the early favorite for the Grade 3, $600,000 Sunland Derby on March 26 with his 14 3/4-length win in the Mine That Bird. He broke on top and controlled the race throughout, setting fractions of 23.43 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.92 for the half-mile, and 1:11.15 for six furlongs. Henry Q proceeded to cover the 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in a quick 1:41.52. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Southern California-based Edwin Maldonado was aboard for Fincher, who was saddling the horse for the first time after trainer Doug O’Neill sent the horse to his barn for The Del Mar Group. “I have to give a big assist to Doug O’Neill,” Fincher said. “I didn’t mess him up. Doug prepared him. I had him a week. “The intent is to run him here through the Sunland Derby.” Henry Q is a son of Blame who was making his two-turn debut and stakes debut Tuesday. Morning-line favorite How Did He Do That was scratched from the Mine That Bird. Fincher trainee Flying Connection ($2.60) won the Island Fashion by 9 1/2 lengths over Love Tank. She has long been a candidate for the $300,000 Sunland Park Oaks, which also is on March 26. The Sunland Park Oaks carries points for the Kentucky Oaks, while the Sunland Derby doles out points for the Kentucky Derby. Flying Connection, a daughter of Nyquist, was making her two-turn debut Tuesday. She set fractions of 23.70 seconds for the opening quarter, 46.88 for the half-mile and 1:11.74 for six furlongs before covering a mile in 1:36.04. “She’s awesome,” Fincher said. “She’s got a lot of speed and she can carry it. She didn’t disappoint in the race or the gallop out, either.” Alfredo Juarez Jr. was aboard Flying Connection. Luis Fuentes rode both Thruthestorm ($7.40) and Cheese Tray ($5.40) as part of a four-win day. All of his winners were trained by Fincher.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
