First Resort, the 2-1 morning-line favorite for Saturday’s $175,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway Park, will scratch from that race due to soreness, trainer Eoin Harty said Friday.  The Battaglia, a Kentucky Derby points race, was to be First Resort’s 3-year-old debut. He ended his 2-year-old campaign with a victory in the Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs last Nov. 30.  Harty said First Resort worked on Monday at Turfway Park but when Harty sent him back out to the track on Wednesday, “he seemed a little short behind,” Harty said.  Harty said diagnostic tests were to be performed on First Resort to further get a gauge on his issue.  “I’ll know more on Monday,” Harty said. “Hopefully, it’s a minor glitch, not a major glitch.”  :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Coming in Hot, winner of the Turfway Prevue Stakes, and Baby Max, winner of the Leonatus Stakes at Turfway, now figure to vie for favoritism in the Battaglia, which offers its top five finishers qualifying points (20-10-6-4-2) toward the May 3 Kentucky Derby.  The scratch of First Resort will allow Special Caliber to draw into the Battaglia from the also-eligible list, leaving Maitre D still needing one scratch to get into the field.  :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
