ALTOONA, Iowa – Excessive, an improving 4-year-old gelding conditioned by leading trainer Lynn Chleborad, broke alertly and pulled an upset in $82,875 Cyclones Handicap, a 1 1/16-mile stakes event for Iowa-breds. Defeating the winners of three of the last four Cyclones in the process, Excessive ($21.60) fended off the challenge of 2014 victor Zeki under jockey Alex Birzer before edging clear by 3 1/4 lengths ahead of Oh My Gravy's steady rally. Cainam, who won this test in 2011 and 2012, never got into it and finished fifth. Excessive, a Poindexter Thoroughbreds LLC homebred, covered the distance in 1:44.71 and earned $49,425 for his connections. Sumting Wong dominates Hawkeyes Sumting Wong, a 5-year-old daughter of Nut N Better, one of the best Iowa-bred mares of all time, lengthened the gap between herself and her Iowa-bred competition with an authoritative 11-length win in the $84,450 Hawkeyes Handicap. Working her way to the front under jockey Alex Birzer, the heavily favored Sumting Wong ($2.80) increased her advantage throughout and stopped the clock in 1:44.51 for the 1 1/16-mile test. Trained by Doug Anderson for breeder Shady Bend Thoroughbreds, who also raced Nut N Better, Sumting Wong earned $50,070.
