Draw Nigh seeks his first stakes victory Sunday in the $50,000 Hoover for Ohio-bred 2-year-olds at Belterra Park. The 5 1/2-furlong race drew a field of 11 colts and geldings. Trained by Tom Rankin, Draw Nigh was pulled up and walked off in his last out June 28 in the Grade 3 Bashford Manor at Churchill Downs. Draw Nigh finished second in his first out at Presque Isle Downs on May 21 but earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 56. That is 21 points higher than his closest opponent in Sunday’s field. In his next out June 8, Draw Nigh won his maiden going five furlongs at Presque Isle Downs. He earned a Beyer of 43, the second-best figure in the Hoover’s field. Unbridled Graduate is still a maiden but has run twice in open company at Churchill Downs for trainer Steve Asmussen. He should improve while facing statebreds. Diakon won at first asking locally for trainer Doug Cowans when sent off as the 4-5 favorite June 12. He won by nearly four lengths after leading by six lengths early in his maiden debut going 4 1/2 furlongs. Diakon had a bullet work Monday, signaling his readiness. ◗ Only two fillies entered the Cincinnatian, so it will be run as an exhibition before Sunday’s first race. Kelly’s Pride looks to have a huge advantage over Long Blonde Angel. Kelly’s Pride has won two of her last three races for trainer Sergio Baez.
