VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The sensational Daz Lin Dawn came from a stalking position to win her seventh straight stakes in the $100,000 British Columbia Oaks at Hastings on Saturday. She paid $4.50. Breaking from post 5 with Richard Hamel aboard, she went three wide around the first two turns while stalking the leaders through a half-mile in 47.48 seconds. She rallied four wide around the stretch turn, took the lead turning for home, and held off a late bid by Yukon Belle to win by a neck in the 1 1/8-mile race that was contested over a sloppy track. Top Quality came from a stalking position to finish third. The final time was 1:51.77. “She was having a hard time handling the track,” said Hamel. “When I asked her she really responded, though. She ran on heart through the lane.” Trainer Nancy Betts wasn’t sure if she would bring Daz Lin Dawn back for the Grade 3, $100,000 Ballerina on Oct. 8. “We’ll see how she comes out of the race and go from there,” she said. “Richard said she didn’t like the wet track so that could be a factor, too.” The daughter of Popular is owned by Betts, JDP holdings Ltd., and Delton Stable. The $55,000 winner’s share of the purse brought her career earnings to $280,650. She is a cinch to be named the local Horse of the Year at the annual awards dinner in December. The Oaks was one of five stakes supporting the Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby. Heavily favored Here’s Hannah was an easy front-running winner of the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity. Amadeo Perez guided to Wise Market, $31.00, to a game half-length victory over Pan Handle in the $100,000 Jack Diamond Futurity. The 2-year-old son of Mass Market dueled with European until midstretch and then held off Pan Handle in the 6 1/2-furlong race. He is trained by Phil Hall. Longshot Highway Boss paid $26.90 for his 5 3/4-length victory over 39-1 Crazy Prophet in the $50,000 S. W. Randall Plate for 3-year-olds and up. The 9-8 exacta paid $1,147.40.
