Kentucky-based jockey Jon Court will be presented with the Mike Venezia Memorial Award on Monday at Belmont Park, the New York Racing Association announced Thursday. The Venezia Award, voted on by the fans, is awarded to a jockey who exemplifies extraordinary sportsmanship and citizenship. It is named in honor of Mike Venezia, who died as a result of injuries suffered in a spill in 1988 at Belmont Park. Previous winners of the Venezia Award include Bill Shoemaker, Angel Cordero Jr., Jerry Bailey, Mike Smith, Gary Stevens, Richard Migliore, and Ramon Dominguez. Court topped an Internet poll of fans on a ballot that included Javier Castellano, Cornelio Velasquez, and Joe Bravo. Court adds the Venezia Award to the George Woolf Memorial Award he earned in 2007. The Woolf Award, voted on by jockeys, honors riders whose career and personal character earn esteem for the individual and the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing. According to Equibase, Court has won 3,880 races, and his horses have earned $94,495,243 in purse money. He won graded stakes with such runners as Leroidesanimaux, Archarcharch, Line of David, and Lang Field.
