Robin Sparkles will be looking for the 10th win of her career Saturday, when she starts as one of the chief contenders in the Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Pimlico Race Course. The five-furlong turf race for fillies and mares is the first of four $100,000 stakes on the card. Carotari will be chasing after his sixth stakes win in the Laurel Dash, while Famed, a half-sister to champion Essential Quality, goes for her first stakes win in the Weather Vane. The card also includes the Polynesian. The Sensible Lady drew a full field of 12, plus four also-eligibles. Of those set to start, half are stakes winners, including Can the Queen, Spun Glass, and Miss J McKay. :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! Robin Sparkles has won three stakes in her 17-race career, with her most recent coming July 23 in the Grade 3 Caress at Saratoga. The victory pushed her earnings over $500,000. Robin Sparkles is a New York-bred by Elusive Quality. “She’s just so consistent,” said Bruce Brown, who trains Robin Sparkles. “She’s been a blessing to us. Her owner, Mike Schrader, has a farm upstate, has been in the game a long time, and it’s good to see a guy like him get a horse like her. Even when she doesn’t win, she generally is always in the race. She’s been very exciting for everybody.” Robin Sparkles wired the field in the Caress and is expected to again show speed when she breaks from post 11 under Angel Cruz. “I wish we got a little better post,” Brown said. “Hopefully, she can get out and get over and try to save some ground. With her kind of speed, she should be able to do that.” Robin Sparkles will be making her first start over the Pimlico turf. “I think it’s pretty similar to Saratoga in a lot of ways, a tighter course, and I think she’ll like it,” Brown said. “Her best thing is how she runs around the turn. If you can give her a breather around the turn, she’ll cut the corner and have something left for the end.” Spun Glass enters off back-to-back turf sprint stakes, one at Laurel Park and the other at Colonial Downs. Miss J McKay won the $100,000 License Fee in June at Belmont Park. Can the Queen is proven over the Pimlico course, having won the $100,000 The Very One in May. Laurel Dash The Laurel Dash, for 3-year-olds and up, will be the second start at Pimlico for Carotari. He won the $100,000 Turf Sprint there in May, leading throughout at the same five-furlong distance over the turf that he travels Saturday. Carotari enters off a seventh-place finish in the Grade 3 Troy on Aug. 5 at Saratoga. He dueled through quick fractions in the 5 1/2-furlong Troy, which was won by Breeders’ Cup winner Golden Pal in a blazing 1:00.92. Carotari has since been training at Churchill Downs. “He’s had a couple of good works,” said trainer Brian Lynch. “He always runs well fresh and he’s run good over that track before. We hope the time and the change in company will help him a bit.” Kendrick Carmouche has the mount for owner William A. Branch. “Usually he’s a horse that wants to lay up close,” Lynch said. “If he gets the lead to himself, he can be very dangerous.” Also set to start in the nine-horse Laurel Dash is Grateful Bred, who has run second in four turf sprint stakes in his last five starts. Weather Vane Stakes Famed is part of a field of 12 for the Weather Vane, which is for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs on the main track. The group includes Elm Drive, winner of the Grade 2 Sorrento last year at Del Mar, and Smash Ticket, the third-place finisher in the Sorrento who is a half-sister to five-time stakes winner Slammed. Famed is making the third start of her form cycle, with her most recent effort a first-level allowance win Aug. 27 at Ellis Park. She won the 6 1/2-furlong race by 4 3/4 lengths and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 83, the best last-race number in the Weather Vane. “I thought her two runs off the layoff have been very good,” said Brad Cox, who trains Famed for Godolphin. “I think we’ve got her in a good spot. Obviously, black type’s huge for her based on her pedigree. And we’re not just trying to get black type – we’re trying to win and we think she’s doing well enough to where if she gets away well, she can.” Sheldon Russell has the mount on Famed. “She needs to get away well,” Cox said. “That’s been one thing that’s kind of compromised her a couple of times in some of her races. She can be a little bit of a step slow from out of the gate. So, we’re hopeful she’ll break and put herself in the game, not necessarily on the lead. At this level, the stakes level, you have to be breaking, being right there, being involved.” ◗ Sea Foam could prove to be the one to catch in the Polynesian, a 1 1/16-mile main-track race for 3-year-olds and up. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
