Chief Know It All survived a jockey and trainer claim of foul to win the Grade 3, $150,000 Canadian Derby at Northlands Park on Saturday. He paid $6.30 for his controversial win in the 1 3/8-mile race for 3-year-olds. With Rico Walcott aboard, Chief Know It All drifted in coming into the stretch, and he clearly bumped and knocked Double Bear off stride, who dead-heated for second with Trooper John. However, the stewards ruled that Double Bear, who set the pace, initiated the contact with his front end, and allowed the result to stand. Chief Know It All looked comfortable sitting just off Double Bear, who led Captain Will by two lengths when he posted a six-furlong time of 1:14.57. Captain Will couldn’t keep up, and when Trooper John made his move at the three-eighths pole, Walcott gave Chief Know It All his cue and he immediately responded. The three horses battled around the final turn with Chief Know It All, racing between foes, holding a slight edge heading into the stretch. It was a thrilling stretch duel with Chief Know it all being very game in holding off Trooper John and Double Bear, who re-rallied after the bumping incident. The final margin was a half-length and the winner was timed in 2:17:06. “When Trooper John came to him at the three eighths pole he really responded,” said Walcott. It was Walcott’s fourth win in the premier race in Alberta, and the third for trainer Robertino Diodoro. Diodoro, who is fourth in wins in North America, claimed Chief Know It All for $100,000 out of his last race at Churchill Downs June 30. “It’s always nice to come home and win in front of family and friends,” said the veteran trainer. “I give the owners a lot of credit for stepping up to the plate. We tried to buy him privately, and when he showed up for the price they didn’t hesitate.” The son of Flashy Bull is owned by Rollingson Racing Stables, Randy Howg, Rick Weist and Clayton Weist. It was the first stakes win for the Kentucky-bred colt. The $90,000 winner’s share brought his lifetime earnings to $234,506.
