OCEANPORT, N.J. – Cherokee Artist, the senior runner in the field at 9, pulled a 7-1 upset Sunday in $76,000 Mr. Prospector Stakes at Monmouth Park. The old boy trained by David Jacobson still has pep in his step. Cherokee Artist beat Ribo Bobo, the 1-2 favorite, by three-quarters of a length for his 13th victory in 51 starts. Cherokee Artist, making his second start since January, owns one other stakes victory: the 2009 Presque Isle Mile. He was claimed by Jacobson for $32,000 in January at Laurel. He has a victory and a third in two races for Jacobson, who also sent out third-place finisher Candyman E. Cherokee Artist and jockey Trevor McCarthy saved ground on the turn before moving outside for the drive. Ribo Bobo, winner of 13 of his previous 15 races, broke sharply but wound up in tight quarters on the backstretch. He battled through to take the lead away from Evolution Rocks turning for home but could not fend off the surging Cherokee Artist. “I knew there was a lot of speed in the race, so I wanted to settle just off the pace and gear up for one run,” McCarthy said. “He really took off in the stretch. Ribo Bobo is a tough horse to run down, but we were able to do it today.” Cherokee Artist paid $17.40 to win. The time was 1:09.73 for the six furlongs on the fast track. Evolution Rocks, the 3-1 second choice, was fourth, followed by Partyallnightlong and Il Villano.
