Caviar N Champagne will try to win her second consecutive Ohio-bred stakes and remain unbeaten in three attempts at the 1 1/16-mile distance in the J. William Petro Memorial Handicap at ThistleDown on Sunday. Trained by Jeff Radosevich, Caviar N Champagne won the Mackey Memorial locally June 7 by three lengths going six furlongs. The 5-year-old mare is 2 for 2 at Sunday’s distance and 4 of 9 over the ThistleDown oval. She won the 2013 running of this event after winning the Mackey previously. She followed that up with a win in the Debartolo last season, accounting for her two wins at the distance. Scott Spieth retains the mount. The venerable Pay the Man returns to her favorite distance and track in the Petro. The 10-year-old mare has won 6 of 9 at the distance and has won 19 of 32 attempts over this oval. Trained by Miguel Feliciano, Pay the Man defeated Caviar N Champagne two starts ago in an open optional claimer locally. Ricky Feliciano retains the mount. Needmore Flattery will face elders  for only the second time in the Petro after finishing second in the Mackey last out. The Tim Hamm trainee also has an affinity for the ThistleDown surface, winning 3 of 5 lifetime. She signaled her readiness with a bullet work locally last Sunday. Hamm also sends out Startin Something, but his two entrants will race as separate betting interests in the field of nine Ohio-bred older fillies and mares.
