OCEANPORT, N.J. – Irish You Well heads the field of Haskell Invitational hopefuls lining up for the $100,000 Long Branch Stakes for 3-year-olds Saturday at Monmouth Park. The 1 1/16-mile Long Branch is the last local prep for the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell on July 27. The Long Branch winner, and usually the runner-up, are extended invites to the richest race of the meet, so this is the window to the big show for the nine Long Branch runners. While none of the entrants has won a graded stakes, the Wayne Catalano trainee Irish You Well presents the most interesting r é sum é . After the chestnut colt was a fast-closing third in a maiden turf race at Fair Grounds, Catalano upped the ante and entered Irish You Well in the Grade 3 Illinois Derby. He acquitted himself well, rallying to get third. Then came an even deeper plunge, the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park. On a sloppy track, Irish You Well dug in to again get third in a very key race. Tonalist and Commissioner, the first two finishers in the Peter Pan, came back to replicate that outcome in the Belmont Stakes. Irish You Well took a less-demanding route, heading to Monmouth for his maiden score, a 7 1/2-length romp on the class drop. “Those were both very big efforts in the stakes,” Catalano said. “Our intention was then to get him over this racetrack and get a win under his belt and then move forward from there. So, here we are.” Catalano likes the way Irish You Well bounced out of the maiden win. “We like our chances, we like the way he’s training,” Catalano said. “He’s coming into this race very well.” Orlando Bocachica will be aboard for the first time. The Haskell hopes for Just Call Kenny ride on the Long Branch, as the colt trained by Pat McBurney looks to make up for lost time. This will be his first start since sustaining a right foreleg condylar fracture in an impressive victory in Gulfstream Park’s Spectacular Bid Stakes on Jan. 4. He missed a comeback allowance race here last month in a paperwork snafu, not having cleared the Florida veterinarian’s list. Encryption keeps improving with every start for trainer Kelly Breen. He was a solid second in Albano’s blowout win here in the Grade 3 Pegasus Stakes last month.
