At a veterinary clinic and a local farm in Southern California, the 2021 champion Echo Zulu and 2023 stakes winner Bus Buzz continue to recover from injuries sustained at Santa Anita earlier this fall. Bus Buzz was pulled up in early stretch of an allowance race at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 when he sustained a foreleg injury that required surgery to perform an arthrodesis, which fused the affected joints. The surgery was conducted at Santa Anita on Nov. 5. Buz Buzz’s injury received higher than normal attention because it occurred on the first of two days in which Santa Anita hosted the Breeders’ Cup races. Bus Buzz is currently recovering at owner and breeder Terry Lovingier’s farm after spending the initial days after the surgery at the Chino Valley Equine Clinic. Lovingier said Bus Buzz will continue his recovery at the farm in early 2024. “He’s doing fabulous,” Lovingier said last weekend. Trained by Steve Knapp, Bus Buzz won 3 of 8 starts and $239,530 in a career highlighted by a win by 4 1/4 lengths in the $175,000 Real Good Deal Stakes for California-bred 3-year-olds at Del Mar in August. :: Bet with the Best! Echo Zulu, the champion 2-year-old filly of 2021, will remain at Chino Valley in coming weeks while recovering from fractured sesamoids sustained in a workout on Oct. 13. “I’m happy with where she’s at,” said Scott Blasi, assistant to trainer Steve Asmussen. “I’m going to leave her there because I’m comfortable with who is looking after her. “We’re on a week-to-week evaluation. We’re still doing okay, but not out of the woods. It’s not the time to make any changes. Why mess with it.” At the time of the injury, Echo Zulu was being prepared for a scheduled start in the BC Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 4. Echo Zulu, who raced for L and N Racing and Winchell Thoroughbreds, won 9 of 11 starts and earned $2,640,375. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
