Bronx Beauty and Ms Locust Point went at it tooth and nail during the final four legs of the Mid-Atlantic Thoroughbred Championships, and when the dust cleared following the Regret Stakes at Monmouth Park on Saturday the pair had dead-heated for both the MATCH overall title and first place in the filly and mare dirt-sprint division. Bronx Beauty and Ms Locust Point battled head to head in the six-furlong Regret before Bronx Beauty edged away to a one-length victory. The win gave Bronx Beauty a series total of 40 points, the same as Regret runner-up Ms Locust Point, who came into the race with a slim lead. According to MATCH rules, the first tie-breaker is wins during the series, which went to Bronx Beauty, who also took down the Penn Ladies Dash at Penn National and the Dashing Beauty at Delaware Park. Although a tie-breaker is not the perfect way end a five-month competition, the Ms Locust Point/Bronx Beauty rivalry is exactly what the MATCH Series was intended develop when it was brought back in 2018 following a 16-year break. For winning the overall championship, Bronx Beauty’s owner, the 2W Stables of Richard Woll, will receive a $50,000 bonus in addition to purse money earned. Trainer Anthony Margotta Jr. receives a $25,000 bonus. 2W Stables will also be awarded $20,000 and Margotta $15,000 as the winner of the filly and mare dirt-sprint division. “She was tested and she passed again,” Margotta said. “She’s a resilient filly. She earned this MATCH championship. I’m happy for her. She deserves it. “It’s a tremendous accomplishment for the team I have. I’m extremely proud of them.” Cash Is King Stable and Jim Reichenberg, the owners of Ms Locust Point will receive a $15,000 bonus as the filly and mare dirt-sprint runner-up. Trainer John Servis gets a $10,000 bonus. Bronx Beauty, a 4-year-old Pennsylvania-bred daughter of Liaison, had not begun her season when the Primonetta Stakes, the first leg of the series, was held at Laurel Park in April. She competed in the final four races, winning at Penn and Delaware, and finishing third at Parx prior to Saturday’s race. Ms Locust Point danced every dance. She won the Primonetta, was second at Penn, second at Delaware, fifth at Parx, and second Saturday. The 3-year-old and up dirt-sprint division went to Laki for the second year in a row, despite a sixth-place finish in the Mr. Prospector at Monmouth on Saturday. Laki, a 6-year-old Maryland-bred gelding, is owned by Hillside Equestrian Meadows and trained by Laurel-based Damon Dilodovico. Laki raced in four legs of the series and earned 24 points. No other horse raced in as many as three legs, a requirement to share in the bonus pool. Completed Pass backed into the 3-year-old and up turf-sprint division with a last-place finish in the 12-horse Rainbow Heir. Owned by Robert Bone and trained by Claudio Gonzalez, Completed Pass dwelt at the start of the race and was beaten 24 lengths. In his prior start, he had broken slowly and finished last at Delaware. A 5-year-old gelding, Completed Pass built up an early MATCH lead when he finished second in the King Leatherbury at Laurel and the Pennsylvania Governor’s Cup at Penn. He concluded the series with 21 points, two more than Abiding Star, who was fifth in the Rainbow Heir, and four more than Paret, who was third Saturday. The filly and mare long-turf title went to Dynatail, who concluded the series with 21 points for Ballybrit Stable and trainer Mike Dini. She finished fifth in the Violet Stakes Saturday but had previously won the Susquehanna Stakes at Penn and the PTHA President’s Cup at Parx.
