Barnavara, the narrow winner of Sunday’s Group 1 Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp Racecourse in Paris, will not be sent to Del Mar for the $2 million Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf on Nov. 1. Trainer Jessica Harrington said on Tuesday that Barnavara will not race again this year, and is scheduled to be sold at auction in December. “I don’t think we will be going” to Del Mar, she said. “I think she had a hard enough race. I don’t want to end up with a bad run. “She’s done very well this year.” Owned by Alpha Racing, a limited partnership organized through Harrington’s Ireland-based stable, Barnavara won stakes in three of her final four starts of 2025, including the Group 2 Blandford Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at the Curragh in Ireland on Sept. 14. :: BREEDERS’ CUP FILLY AND MARE TURF: See DRF’s special section with top contenders, odds, comments, news, and more In the Prix de l’Opera, one of Europe’s most prestigious races for fillies and mares, Barnavara led throughout and won by the official margin of a short neck over See The Fire, a candidate for the BC Filly and Mare Turf. Harrington said Barnavara will sell as a racing or broodmare prospect. One Look and Wemightakedlongway, third and fourth in the Prix d l’Opera, are under consideration for the BC Filly and Mare Turf. The race is run at 1 3/8 miles, which will be a new distance for Gimme a Nother, the Maryland-based mare who won the Grade 2 John C. Mabee Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Del Mar on Sept. 6. Gimme a Nother was diagnosed with a splint bone injury following that race, and is nearing a return to workouts, trainer Graham Motion said on Tuesday. Motion said he feels “very comfortable timing-wise” that Gimme a Nother can start in the BC Filly and Mare Turf. “I’ve gone easier with her,” he said. “I have to make sure it doesn’t flare. “She has a chance to have three more bits of work.” Juan Hernandez, the leading rider in California, has the mount on Gimme a Nother, Motion said. The California-based candidates are led by Mission of Joy, who earned a fees-paid berth with an upset win in the Grade 2 Rodeo Drive Stakes at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Santa Anita last Saturday. Mission of Joy, owned by RyZan Sun Racing and Madaket Stable, closed from sixth of eight to win by a head at 11-1, her first victory in three starts since being transferred from Motion to current trainer Phil D’Amato. The BC Filly and Mare Turf will be Mission of Joy’s longest race in her 22nd start. “We can’t pass up a shot at the money – as long as you can finish in the money,” D’Amato said. “I think she’s really better on firm turf. The owners were looking for firm turf when they sent her out here and you have a better chance to get firm turf here than back East. It worked out.” :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
