Trainer Marcus Melander had three horses entered in Saturday's Grade 1 $600,000 Breeders Crown for 3-year-old colt and gelding trotters, with the public focused on Super Chapter and Maryland. However, when the dust settled, it was 62-1 outsider Meshuggah hugging the pylons throughout the mile that got the job done for driver Scott Zeron. Meshuggah a son of Greenshoe, scored in 1:50 1/5, passing stablemate Super Chapter in the shadow of the wire and giving Melander a one-two finish. The time represented the fastest ever Breeders Crown trotting mile and was a divisional stakes record. With plenty of action to his outside, Zeron left from the pole position with Meshuggah and allowed a host to get involved in the early action. Go Dog Go and Todd McCarthy blasted from post 10 to out-sprint Mr Mouton and gain control into the opening bend. Both Super Chapter, with Dexter Dunn, and Maryland, with Yannick Gingras, took spots along the pylons in front of their stablemate, while race favorite Emoticon Legacy, with Louis Roy, rolled up on the outside to pursue the front. Go Dog Go sizzled the opening fraction in 26 1/5 and grabbed up enough to allow Emoticon Legacy to gain control three-eighths of a mile into the contest. Before Emoticon Legacy hit the half, Dunn was already on the move with Super Chapter and gaining. The half was clocked in 55 1/5, but Super Chapter was in high gear through a wicked three-quarters and was ready to overtake the leader with a 27 second flat quarter. Go Dog Go and McCarthy were able to angle off the pylons as Maryland gapped cover and took up position behind Super Chapter as that one moved clear in mid-stretch. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Zeron waited patiently along the pylons, and as others bore out, Meshuggah kept a straight path on the inside. By mid-stretch he had enough room to start gaining ground on his stablemate. Dunn urged Super Chapter, who dug in bravely, but Zeron coaxed Meshuggah and got the most out of him to get the decision. Go Dog finshed third, followed by Greenma and Mr Mouton. Owned by Anders Strom's Courant Inc., Meshuggah was bred by Hanover Shoe Farms and is out of the Trixton-sired mare Starita. As the longest shot to ever capture this Breeders Crown division, Meshuggah returned $127.10 to win. "Ever since Marcus (Melander) pulled the front shoes, he's been more slick-gaited," said Zeron following the win. "At first I was worried about Go Dog Go," said Melander about the stretch run. “Then I saw Scott coming up the inside. I'm happy to be first and second." For owner Strom, Meshuggah is a match of his former racehorse and current sire Greenshoe with a mare he was fond of. "I loved the dam Starita," Strom said. Meshuggah was a $120,000 yearling purchase from the 2023 Lexington Selected sale. Sons of Greenshoe finished first, third and fourth in this division.
