The Brazilian-bred Baccelo will be making his first start in the United States for trainer Eduardo Caramori in the $75,000, one-mile Independence Day Stakes at Mountaineer Park on Wednesday night. The 4-year-old colt came to the United States in February and was turned over to Caramori. “Early in the year, we had him at Palm Meadows, and he has been training at the Thoroughbred Training Center recently,” said Caramori, also a native of Brazil. “He is doing great. He is very versatile, and we are expecting great things from him. We thought this would be a good spot to start. He is best at about a mile, I think, but the mile over there is one turn. The two-turn mile will be new for him, and the sharp turns at Mountaineer will be a challenge also.” Baccelo has two wins in 10 lifetime starts, with five seconds. Caramori likes his horse’s chances in the Independence Day field of 10. “He was facing some really good horses down there,” Caramori said. “He likes to lay off the early speed, but the early speed there is a lot different than the early speed here, and he is not used to it. We have big plans for him; he is a really good horse.” Marcelino Pedroza will ride. Keg Party is unbeaten in three starts over the Mountaineer turf course and will be looking to continue that streak for trainer Eric Reed. The 4-year-old colt by Any Given Saturday has won 4 of 6 on turf lifetime. He won his maiden race locally and then captured first- and second-level allowance events last year, all on turf. This year, Keg Party has a win, a second, and a third in three starts – on grass at Sam Houston, on the synthetic at Turfway Park, and on a muddy main track at Canterbury, respectively. Christian Pilares will ride. DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 10 Voodoo Storm. Trained by Mike Maker for Ken and Sarah Ramsey, Sassy Kitten has posted both of her wins this year going a mile on turf. She won her first start of the year Feb. 17 at Gulfstream Park and then took an optional-claiming race at Churchill Downs on April 30. Maker said the Firecracker is a good spot for his charge. “She seems to really like the one-mile distance, and she has not had good dirt form,” he said. “She can adapt to anything. We will see how it develops. She can go to the lead or lay off the pace. I think this will be a great spot to get her first stakes victory and show us what she can do.” Ronnie Allen Jr. will ride. “He is having a great year,” Maker said of Allen. “I think he will fit her well.” DRF FORMULATOR FACT: No. 8 Sassy Kitten.
