HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Maria Borell, who won the 2015 Breeders’ Cup Sprint with Runhappy, and Drawing Away Stable confirmed Wednesday that the two have parted ways. Drawing Away had added Borell to its roster of trainers five months ago. “Maria is no longer training for us,” said Sandy Levine, one of the managing partners of Drawing Away. “It just wasn’t working out, so we decided to move the horses – there were six in total – to some of our other trainers currently at Gulfstream Park.” Borell has not won a race from 16 starters at Gulfstream Park in 2016, although she did record three seconds and three thirds during the winter-spring meeting. Borell’s most recent starter, Stock, who is co-owned by Force of Nature Farms, finished fifth in a $25,000 claiming race here May 11. Borell referred questions to her lawyer, John Sutton, who said on her behalf, “Maria was complimented by Drawing Away in March of this year for her good efforts. There is evidence that others were jealous of her success and had some motive to harm her reputation and without good cause. Undoubtedly, this was the cause of her separation from Drawing Away.” Borell gained national attention as the trainer of Runhappy in 2015. She saddled the Eclipse Award sprint champion to five consecutive victories last year, culminating with his victory in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. She was fired the next day by owner Jim McIngavle. Runhappy capped off his award-winning season by capturing the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita on Dec. 26 for his current trainer, Laura Wohlers. He has not yet started in 2016.
