HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Bitacora made the most of her second chance in the $100,000 Ginger Punch Stakes, rallying to a half-length victory over Unbridled Courage in the turf fixture for Florida-bred fillies and mares at Gulfstream Park. Madame Uno finished a tiring third, another 2 1/2 lengths farther back, as the 3-5 favorite.   Bitacora finished second, beaten a half-length, in the 2017 Ginger Punch for her previous trainer Francisco D’Angelo. The 4-year-old daughter of Dominus joined trainer Peter Walder’s barn after being haltered for $50,000 here in December and has been a model of consistency ever since, finishing second three times before winning each of her last two starts, including the Ginger Punch. With Tyler Gaffalione aboard, Bitacora rated near the rear of the seven-horse field off a pace set by Magalie and prompted by a hard-held Madame Uno. Bitacora advanced readily leaving the backstretch, continued her bid down the center of the course, finally overtaking Unbridled Courage after ducking in to bump that rival in late stretch. Unbridled Courage, well placed from the outset, wrested command from Madame Uno nearing the furlong marker, was steadied after being jostled by the winner in late stretch, and could not recover while easily second-best. Following a stewards' inquiry and claim of foul lodged by the rider of Unbridled Courage against the winner, the result stood. Bitacora, owned in partnership by Marshall Mack, Paradise Farms, and Walder, paid $10. She received an 82 Bayer Speed Figure. “We made a minor equipment change a couple of starts ago after she’d been a bridesmaid several times in a row and it seemed to help,” said Walder. “Now she’s the bride, she’s won two in a row.” Walder said he decided to claim Bitacora with statebred races like the Ginger Punch in mind. “We claimed her for $50,000 because we saw she’d run good against that company before and if we could improve her a little bit we’d be all right,” said Walder. “It’s not often a plan works out six months in advance, but it did.”
