Bim Bam needed every inch of the Mountaineer Park stretch to get up in time to win the $75,000 Independence Day Stakes on Wednesday evening. Trained by Ron Moquett and ridden by Jareth Loveberry, Bim Bam was nearly last early in the one-mile turf race for older horses. Loveberry angled the 7-year-old horse out in the stretch, and Bim Bam ran down longshot Machiavelique at the wire to win by a long neck. It was another neck back to Keg Party in third. Bim Bam ran the mile over a yielding turf course in 1.37.01 and returned $13.40 to win. The $2 exacta returned $613.80. Longshot La Malaguena also needed the entire Mountaineer stretch to run down the favored Sassy Kitten in the $75,000 Firecracker for older fillies and mares. Trained by Brian Michael and ridden by Albin Jimenez, La Malaguena was second-to-last in the early going. Jimenez rallied his mount six wide into the stretch and ran down Sassy Kitten to win by a neck. Bodacious Barb was a head farther back in third. The running time for the mile over a yielding turf course was 1.36.62, and La Malaguena paid $51 to win and set off a $210.40 exacta for a $2 wager.
