ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Big Time Boss is dropping out of open stakes company with money rider Rafael Hernandez aboard to contest Sunday’s $150,000 Clarendon Stakes, a six-furlong test for Ontario-sired and Ontario-bred 2-year-olds. Trained by Josie Carroll for Di Scola Boys Stable, Big Time Boss has raced twice with Hernandez aboard both times. The homebred overcame a tardy start to land his six-furlong debut with a 67 Beyer Speed Figure after dueling through soft fractions. Big Time Boss moved out to 1 1/16 miles on Nov. 2 in the Grade 3 Grey. Sent off at 5-1, he raced three wide in third and then made a bid at the head of the stretch before fading to fifth while looking the part of a sprinter. Hernandez is by far the leading stakes rider at the Woodbine meet, with 21 added-money scores to his credit from 72 starters. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! The nine-horse field also includes restricted stakes winners Reload Raleigh, Big Bold and First, and Silver Is Best. Reload Raleigh never challenged after missing the break when debuting in July. The speedy son of Reload subsequently beat maidens and then doubled up in the seven-furlong Frost King. “He’s really matured a lot and he’s doing very well,” trainer Barbara Minshall said. “He’s run very well, except for that first race. Maybe he wasn’t mentally ready for it, but I like to get a race into my 2-year-olds and he has continued to grow from there. “With racing, he’s learning. The last couple of times, I worked him with older, more seasoned horses, who helped show him the way around, and he’s done very well with that. He’s maturing into a nice horse.” Big Bold and First, who won the $201,000 Simcoe for yearling sales stakes alums in August, could vie for the lead with Reload Raleigh. He has been fried in a speed duel in each of his last two outings, finishing fourth in the Bull Page Stakes and a distant fifth in the Frost King. Silver Is Best and Big Bold and First are sons of Signature Red trained by Bill Tharrenos for owner Mike Coll. Silver Is Best posted the highest Beyer in this field, a 76, when romping second-time out against maidens in July. After coming up empty in the 6 1/2-furlong Simcoe, he won the Bull Page at the same distance with just a 53 Beyer before losing the Frost King by a head. Competing the lineup are Fleet of Foot, Princecrest, Streetshavenoname, and Duckduckduck. The Mark Casse trainees Fleet of Foot and Princecrest are both turning back from a route. Fleet of Foot is coming off a victory in an auction maiden special weight on the inner turf. Princecrest is a maiden after three races. His best performance was a second to Dixie Law in the Cup and Saucer Stakes. Post time for the 11-race card is 1:05 p.m. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
