Jockey Vinnie Bednar, who suffered lower-limb paralysis in a one-horse spill at Los Alamitos on Aug. 22, was recently transferred to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., according to a message posted earlier this month on a Gofundme web page launched to defray medical costs. Craig Hospital specializes in treating people with spinal cord injuries. Bednar, 28, underwent surgery on his spinal cord on Aug. 23 at USC Medical Center and was hospitalized there until the recent transfer. “The team at Craig has been phenomenal in even the short time they have had with Vinnie,” the Gofundme message said, in part. Bednar was injured when he was unseated from Peek It Up in a 300-yard race in which the filly suffered a fatal injury toward the end of the race. :: Click to learn about our DRF's Free Past Performance program. Bednar was the second-leading Quarter Horse jockey at the current Los Alamitos meeting at the time of the injury, and had won three six-figure races in July and August. Last December, Bednar won the $600,000 Champion of Champions on He Looks Hot, the 2019 Quarter Horse World Champion. As of Friday, the Gofundme page had raised more than $87,000 on Bednar’s behalf. A Dash of Sign makes local debut A Dash of Sign, who was sixth by a half-length in the $891,900 Remington Park Oklahoma-Bred Futurity in April, will have her Los Alamitos debut in a 300-yard allowance race for 2-year-olds on Sunday. Trained by Mike Robbins for Reliance Ranch, A Dash of Sign was winless in three starts at Ruidoso Downs during the summer. A Dash of Sign was a troubled fifth in a division of the All American Futurity trials at Ruidoso Downs on Aug. 21. A Dash of Sign has drawn the outside post in a field of seven. The runners from the inside two post positions – Delighted and PYC Powerglide – are likely to attract support. Delighted was promoted from second to first in a maiden race at 350 yards on Aug. 15 after race winner Terrific Temper was disqualified for causing interference. Delighted has not raced since the maiden race, while Terrific Temper won a division of the Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Breeders Futurity trials on Sept. 13. PYC Powerglide, fifth in the $279,200 Kindergarten Futurity in May, was second by three-quarters of a length in an allowance race at 300 yards on Aug. 1 as the 8-5 favorite. Jaime Gomez trains PYC Powerglide and J Best Boogie, who starts from post 6. J Best Boogie was second in a division of the Ed Burke Million Futurity trials on June 7 in his most recent start.
