Jockey Tyler Baze will be sidelined until the start of the Del Mar meeting on July 20 after sustaining a broken bone in a hand in a post parade at Los Alamitos on Saturday, he said on Wednesday. Baze saw a specialist on Monday and said he was informed he will not need surgery. He said he has been fitted with a soft cast that protects the two small finger of a hand and covers his wrist. Baze said he hopes to receive doctor’s approval in a few weeks to resume full activity. The injury has not prevented him from doing gym workouts, he said. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports “In a few weeks, I’ll get another x-ray,” he said. The current Los Alamitos meeting ends on July 7, followed by more than a week without daytime Thoroughbred racing in Southern California before the start of the Del Mar meeting. “That’s what I’m shooting for,” Baze said of Del Mar. Baze sustained the injury when the 2-year-old filly Swift Harmony behaved erratically before a maiden race. “She jammed my hand in the wrong way,” Baze said last weekend. Baze has 26 wins this year, and ranked in the top 10 in the jockey standings at the two meetings at Santa Anita earlier this year. Baze, 41, has won 2,923 races in a career that began in 1999. The winner of four Breeders’ Cup races, Baze was the champion apprentice jockey of 2000. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
