Heavy stakes favorites ruled at Hastings on Saturday July 6, as Avana was a comfortable 2 3/4-length winner under Amadeo Perez in the Supernaturel for 3-year-old fillies. Avana, a Barbara Heads trainee who went off at 1-9, was allowed to drift several lengths off the pace of stablemate Viva La Diva in the four-horse field. She eventually squeezed through along the rail on the stretch turn. The winner, owned by Peter Redekop B C Ltd., covered 1 1/16 furlongs in 1:44.78 and returned $2.30. Viva La Diva completed an all-Barbara Heads exacta under jockey Antonio Reyes. It was another 1 1/2 lengths back to Donna Wyn in third. :: Bet with the Best! August Rain, sired by Sungold, was handy enough to dart through an opening entering the backstretch to overcome a traffic obstacle, only to have a tiring foe back up in his path on the final bend. Entering the stretch, August Rain still had a whole lot of work to do, but eventually found a clear path. August Rain got up to win by a nose. Also owned by Peter Redekop B C Ltd., the winner paid $3.10 to win after stopping the clock in 1:44.18 over the fast strip.  Diocles, the longest shot on the board and trained by Pat Jarvis, raced gamely to just miss and was a half-length in front of third-place finisher Westminster. August Rain is now 2 for 2 going 1 1/16 miles and is on the trail toward the B.C. Derby. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
