ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Kevin Attard experienced quite a bit of stakes success in September, recording victories with Starship Jubilee in the Grade 2 Canadian Stakes, Amalfi Coast in the Ontario Damsel Stakes, and Pumpkin Rumble in the Alphabet Soup Handicap at Parx. Starship Jubilee romped in the Canadian Stakes for the second year in a row on Sept. 14, defeating European shipper Magnetic Charm by 4 1/4 lengths. She earned a 103 Beyer Speed Figure, the second triple-digit Beyer of her career. The only other triple-digit Beyer was a 104 she earned in the 2018 edition of the Canadian Stakes. Attard said the 6-year-old daughter of Indy Wind was nominated to the Grade 1, $600,000 E. P. Taylor Stakes, which will be run over 1 1/4 miles on the E. P. Taylor turf course at Woodbine on Oct. 12. Attard said another option under consideration was the Grade 3, $200,000 Athenia Stakes over 1 1/16 miles on turf at Belmont Park on Oct. 20. “No final decision has been made yet,” Attard said. “We obviously nominated her to the E. P. Taylor. It’s hard to pass a Grade 1 in your own backyard. The mile and a quarter is a little beyond her best. We’ll have to really think about it, see how the field is shaping up and take it from there.” Starship Jubilee returned to the work tab for the first time since her victory in the Canadian on Saturday at Woodbine, breezing four furlongs in 52.60 seconds on the dirt training track. A week following Starship Jubilee’s win in the Canadian, Pumpkin Rumble traveled to Parx to win the Alphabet Soup Handicap for Pennsylvania-breds on Sept. 21. Pumpkin Rumble settled off a quick pace in the Alphabet Soup, and then rallied along the rail to win by a half-length over Saratoga Jack. Pumpkin Rumble finished the 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:40.21, breaking the course record of 1:40.40 set in 1986. Attard said the connections had been considering a run in the Grade 1 Northern Dancer Turf Stakes for Pumpkin Rumble following a pair of third-place finishes in the Grade 3 Dominion Day Stakes and the Grade 2 Nijinsky Stakes earlier in the year, but opted for the race at Parx instead. “He was nominated for [the Northern Dancer],” Attard said. “The Northern Dancer looked like it was coming up tough. This was a restricted race, so it should have been a drop in class considering the competition he had been facing in open graded races here. It kind of all worked out well. He ran really well and broke a 30-year old track record to boot.” Pumpkin Rumble also won last year’s Grade 3 Valedictory Stakes to close out his 2018 Woodbine campaign, and Attard said he would be pointing Pumpkin Rumble toward this year’s Valedictory on Dec. 15 as a long-term target. “Right now, it’s just a matter of trying to map out a plan that gets us to the Valedictory,” he said. “Arguably, his synthetic races are better than his turf races. The problem is finding those right races for him.” A day after Pumpkin Rumble’s victory at Parx, Amalfi Coast kept the momentum going for Attard at Woodbine with her victory in the Ontario Damsel Stakes. Attard said Amalfi Coast would be pointed toward the $125,000 Carotene Stakes for 3-year old Ontario-bred fillies over 1 1/8 miles on the E. P. Taylor turf course on Oct. 20. “That seems like the next logical spot for her,” he said. “It’s restricted company and stretching her out a little bit further. She came out of the race in great shape, so that seems to be the most appropriate next race for her.” Amalfi Coast recorded her first stakes win while making her sixth start in the Ontario Damsel. She debuted with a runner-up finish in May, and did not break her maiden until her fourth start on Aug. 2. Attard said the addition of blinkers for that start has seemed to help Amalfi Coast, who has won two of her three races since. “We’ve regarded her highly from the get-go,” he said. “It was a little bit of a disappointment after her first race. I didn’t think it would take her as long as it did to break her maiden. Since the addition of blinkers, I think she’s been a little more focused.”
