ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Kevin Attard will send out a pair of runners in search of his second career victory in Sunday’s $225,000 Cup and Saucer Stakes for Canadian-bred 2-year-olds over 1 1/16 miles on the E.P. Taylor turf course at Woodbine. Attard won the Cup and Saucer in 2006 with Leonnatus Anteas, and he will send out Malibu Mambo and More Chances in this year’s edition. Malibu Mambo will make his turf debut in the Cup and Saucer after winning his maiden in a seven-furlong sprint on Tapeta on Aug. 31. “Malibu Mambo was working really well prior to his first race,” Attard said. “He won first time out kind of like we expected him to. He’s worked back really well in the interim, and we’re very excited to get him going again. He was on the turf a couple of weeks ago, and I thought he moved over it lovely, just effortlessly. We’ve had a lot of rain this week, so you always wonder that if there’s a little give to [the turf] how he’ll like that, but we’re very happy with him.” More Chances is still a maiden coming into the Cup and Saucer, but Attard said he was pleased with his debut race on Sept. 2, when he finished second in a six-furlong turf sprint. “He’s a nice colt as well,” he said. “He and Malibu Mambo had been work partners for a long time, but then we separated them a little later on. He ran really well first time out. The winner won fairly easily, but we were a solid second. I was happy with the way he performed that day. I thought he galloped out really well, and he also had a great work last week.” KEY CONTENDERS Malibu Mambo, by Point of Entry Beyer: 68 ◗ The only negative might be the fact he drew the outside in the 12-horse field. More Chances, by Hard Spun Beyer: 67 ◗ Jockey Eurico Da Silva has won the last three editions of the Cup and Saucer and appears to have chosen More Chances over Barilko for this race.
