VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Arollercoasterride, who is coming off a win going six furlongs in a maiden special weight at Santa Rosa Aug. 13, looks as good as any in the Grade 3, $125,000 British Columbia Derby at Hastings Saturday. The 1 1/8-mile Derby headlines a stellar nine-race card that includes the $75,000 British Columbia Oaks, $50,000 S. W. Randall Plate for 3-year-olds and up, and the $50,000 Delta Colleen for fillies and mares. Post time for the Derby is 5:30 p.m. Pacific. The nine horses entered will each carry 126 pounds. Arollercoasterride was making his second start on dirt for trainer Steve Miyadi when he romped by 5 1/2 lenghts at Santa Rosa and the 75 Beyer he received is the best last-race figure in the field. The Kentucky-bred son of Curlin will be making his first start for trainer Barbara Heads. His pedigree suggests he could thrive going around three turns for the first time. “He is a really nice horse and has settled into the track well,” said Heads. “He is a good size for the track, not a big horse, and he seems better on dirt than Tapeta. I think he has the talent and the only thing he lacks is experience.” :: DRF Bets members get FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic. Join now! Arollercoasterride ran okay in his three starts on Tapeta at Golden Gate Fields, but picked things up when he ran on dirt for the first time in a maiden special weight at Pleasanton July 9, and took a huge step forward in his easy win at Santa Rosa. Antonio Reyes will be aboard when Arollercoasterride breaks from post 2. Heads said Reyes was pleased with how Arollercoasterride worked five furlongs in 1:01.00 Sept. 3. “Antonio said he did everything he was asked in the work and he galloped out like a horse that will run all day,” Heads said. The Edgar Mendoza-trained Soaringforthesun will try to rebound following a disappointing effort in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby at Century Mile Aug. 20. A British Columbia-bred son of Sungold, Soaringforthesun won the $50,000 Sir Winston Churchill at Hastings prior to his sixth-place finish in the 1 1/4-mile Canadian Derby. Soaringforthesun likes to be involved early and was taken out of his game when he stumbled at the start and broke inward in the Canadian Derby. He could be dangerous with a clean start while being back at his home track. Soaringforthesun will break from post 6 with leading rider Amadeo Perez up. Regal Riot, trained by Robbie Anderson, lost a lot of ground while going wide around the first turn in the Canadian Derby but rallied late to finish third in another solid effort. Bred in British Columbia by Anderson’s wife, Susann Anderson, Regal Riot has compiled a 3-1-3 record from 7 starts with victories in the $50,000 Chris Loseth and $50,000 Ross McLeod. Stormy Blue has improved dramatically in his last two starts for trainer Carl Lausten. He could be dangerous from a forward position as he goes for the hat trick. Boitano has a right to improve after finishing in a dead-heat for second in his first start at Hastings in a conditioned allowance race for trainer Mel Snow Aug. 13.
