ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Amalfi Coast ($21.10) split horses in the stretch and drew clear in the final furlong to record her first career stakes victory in the featured $125,000 Ontario Damsel Stakes on Sunday afternoon at Woodbine. Under jockey Eurico Da Silva, Amalfi Coast rated toward the back of the field along the backstretch in the one-mile turf route, with the favored Bold Script to her inside. Miss Ariel had a clear lead and took the field through moderate early fractions of 24.25 seconds for the opening quarter and 48.03 seconds for the opening half-mile. Turning for home, Bold Script made her move for the lead along the rail, and Amalfi Coast and Da Silva followed her path before splitting horses at the top of the lane. Amalfi Coast took to the lead from Miss Ariel inside the eighth pole and kicked clear from her rivals to win by 2 1/2 lengths over the closing Intanga Rose, who trailed the field early on after being pinched at the gate. Miss Ariel held on for third. Amalfi Coast completed a mile in 1:34.67 over firm turf. “She was in a good spot,” Da Silva said. “She was running very relaxed, but I was worried a little bit because I was behind a wall of horses there. We chose to take the short trip, go inside, and everything worked out for us.” Amalfi Coast recorded her first career stakes win, while also making her first start on turf. Amalfi Coast is a half-sister to Why Katherine, who was multiple graded-stakes-placed on the turf for owner-breeder Terra Racing Stable. “We were looking to get her on the turf,” winning trainer Kevin Attard said. “Her family on the dam side, we’ve had success with them on the turf . . . It’s nice to have these options with her, and she’s very versatile. Obviously, with this time of year coming around, the turf is going to be limited, so we’ll see what comes up next and take it from there.” Red Giveaway stays perfect in Bull Page Earlier on the card, Red Giveaway ($7.50) made every pole a winning one to remain unbeaten in his second career start in the $100,000 Bull Page Stakes. Red Giveaway broke well under jockey Luis Contreras and went straight to the front while being pressured by Rockcrest through opening splits of 21.95 seconds for the opening quarter and 44.29 seconds for the opening half-mile. Despite the early pressure, Red Giveaway would not be denied on the day, as he shook loose at the top of the stretch and drew away to win by 4 1/4 lengths over Rockcrest in a time of 1:09.10 for six furlongs on Tapeta. Stablemate Red Fiction was third. “It looked very easy but he’s a game horse, I like him so much,” Contreras said. “I got a perfect trip, he broke running and I was just a pilot. Turning for home, I just asked him, and he just kept running.” Red Giveaway's Bull Page victory followed an impressive debut win on July 28. The Norseman Racing Stable homebred is trained by Sid Attard.
