Trainer Uriah St. Lewis stunned the racing world a year ago when he won the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup with 45-1 Discreet Lover. On Saturday, he pulled off another amazing upset in the $200,000 Greenwood Cup at Parx with Adventist, who was sent off at 50-1 in a six-horse field. St. Lewis, a native of the Republic of Trindad and Tobago, claimed Adventist for $10,000 at Aqueduct in April 2018. The Greenwood Cup, a 1 1/2-mile dirt race, was his second win from 20 starts since. The other came in a $25,000 starter race at Parx in July. Marconi was the heavy favorite for much of the betting but War Story took late money, with Marconi going off at 7-10 and War Story 6-5. Asphalt Paving, 75-1, set the pace while being tracked by War Story. Marconi was sluggish from the gate but moved up to a contending position three wide on the first turn. Adventist was well back and had one horse beaten. Early on the backstretch with 5 1/2 furlongs remaining, War Story and Marconi put away Asphalt Paving while racing a head apart. Entering the stretch, it looked like the race would be decided by the two favorites, who continued to eyeball each other. Adventist had moved into third but was still about four lengths back. War Story held Marconi at bay as the pair battled through the lane but they began to tire as Adventist leveled off under jockey John Bisono and rolled by leaving the sixteenth pole to post a three-length victory. War Story bested Marconi for second by a length. The race’s final time was 2:33.81. Adventist paid $103, $37, and $6.80. War Story paid $5.20 and $2.40. Marconi, who had $69,000 of the $82,000 show pool wagered on him, returned $2.10. The win was St. Lewis’ 12th from 169 starts (6 percent) this year. The Greenwood Cup was his first stakes win since the Jockey Club Gold Cup. Adventist, a 6-year-old gelding, is now 4 for 42 in his career. Saturday’s win was his first in a stakes. The win was Bisono’s first stakes score since August 2018 at Prairie Meadows. Adventist is campaigned by Bleu Max Stable.
