Indiana-bred 3-year-old horses take center stage at Indiana Grand Race Course Wednesday with a pair of $85,000 one-mile turf events. The Snack for 3-year-olds and the Ellen’s Lucky Star for 3-year-old fillies both drew full fields of 12 with two also-eligibles. Proud Azteca is in search of his second consecutive turf win in the Snack off an impressive score in the $75,000 English Channel at Gulfstream Park June 14. Trained by Mike Maker, Proud Azteca came from next to last, 14 lengths off the lead, to win the 1 1/16-mile English Channel by 2 1/2 lengths. With an abundance of early speed in the Snack, his come-from-behind style should play well. Miguel Mena will ride for the first time. The speedy Bisque is looking for his first win of the year in the Snack. Trained by Tom Amoss, Bisque won over the turf here last July 8 going five furlongs. In his only other turf attempt he finished fourth tow starts ago in an allowance event at Keeneland April 18. Jeremy Rose will be aboard. Mister Pollard holds the highest lifetime Beyer Speed Figure in the field with an 84 earned for a second in the Bachelor Stakes at Oaklawn Park April 11. Mister Pollard was beaten a half-length in the six-furlong event. Trained by Mike Lauer, Mister Pollard drew post 10 in the Snack. Express Model makes her first turf attempt in the Ellen’s Lucky Star. A daughter of Unbridled Express trained by Jeff Greenhill, Express Model finished third in her last out in the Swifty Sired Fillies Stakes going six furlongs over a sloppy surface here June 4. Express Model finished third going a mile and 70 yards in the Silverbulletday at the Fair Grounds in January. She earned a Beyer of 86 in that race, the highest in the Ellen’s Lucky Star field. James Graham retains the mount. Elegant Model comes into the Ellen’s Lucky Star off a win going a mile in an optional-claiming race here June 6. Trained by Tommy Drury Jr., Elegant Model has come from just off the pace in all three of her victories. A daughter of Suave, Elegant Model is not bred for the turf, according to her Tomlinson Figure of 226. Anything over a 280 is said to improve a horses chances on the turf. Malcom Franklin will ride.
