Trainer Rodriguez issued provisional suspension for HISA violation

Rudy Rodriguez denied that any of his horses were denied veterinary care.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has issued a provisional suspension to trainer Rudy Rodriguez after a hearing officer ruled that the organization’s charges against the trainer of failure to provide proper veterinary care represented a sufficient risk to horse welfare.

The suspension began today, according to a notice provided to Rodriguez’s attorneys and posted on the HISA website. The suspension will last until the case is formally adjudicated, which will be in a matter of weeks.

A prolific turf writer, Ed Bowen spent his entire adult life in racing, from odd jobs on the track to serving as the longtime president of the Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation.

Ed Bowen, the prolific writer, editor, researcher, and equine advocate who died earlier this year, has been selected to be included in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame's Joe Hirsch Media Roll of Honor, along with journalist Ray Kerrison and photographer Charles Cook, the Hall of Fame announced on Tuesday.

TUCSON, Ariz. – Within the community of race timers and those who watch over them, there’s plenty of debate on the details of the systems that would produce the most accurate times for American races. On one issue, however, there is no debate.

Get rid of the run-up.

Panelists on Wednesday afternoon gathered at the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing for a session to discuss American race timing. All agreed that the run-up needs to be eliminated, having far outlived its usefulness, if it ever had any legitimate use at all.

Miyadi nearing end of suspension

Trainer Steve Miyadi will complete a 20-day suspension on Thursday for working a gelding at Del Mar in July a day after the runner was scratched because of illness.

The suspension began on Nov. 22, according to a ruling published on Saturday by Los Alamitos stewards. The suspension was part of an mutual agreement between the California Horse Racing Board and Miyadi, according to the ruling.

Santa Anita expands California-bred benefits

Santa Anita will have expanded benefits for California-breds, starting on opening day at their winter-spring meet.

The already favorable eligibility terms for California-breds in allowance races will be expanded, beginning at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting on Dec. 26.

Earlier this month, the track, along with horsemen’s organizations, announced an expansion of allowance race options for statebreds on a 12-month trial basis.

Currently, California-breds that win a first-level allowance race for statebreds on dirt or turf, can switch surfaces and race in a first-level allowance race for statebreds until they win on the second surface.

David O'Rourke, the chief executive of the New York Racing Association, outlined NYRA's new policy on computer-assisted wagering at the University of Arizona on Tuesday and said the rules will be implemented either this month or in January.
