Curious strategy employed on low-level claiming filly. She set a slow pace early before being wrangled back and surrendering the lead to a front-running winner. This race was a toss.

Aqueduct - Gotham (race 9)
COMMENT: Shagaf continued a big day for trainer Chad Brown, who earlier ran 1-2-3 in the Grade 3 The Very One, and continued his own Derby dreams, winning for the third time in as many starts. Coming off a smart tally at Gulfstream Jan. 29, the son of Bernardini was up close early while inside early as Laoban went off to set the pace, Shagaf pulled back a bit after a half-mile, moved closer again on the turn, swung out for room into the lane and reeled in Laoban.
ARCADIA, Calif. – Rain is on the way, which means the second race Sunday at Santa Anita will move to the main track, and scratches are likely throughout the card. Therefore, the wagering plan will be brief – two wagers over three races for a total outlay of $20.
It’s a terrific Sunday card at Santa Anita, with sizable and competitive fields making for some interesting handicapping. Some of the later races in particular offer some enticing angles. Here we go …
In Race 6, a maiden special weight route, isn’t Hoffenheim a good go-against? He’s been the beaten favorite in each of his last four starts, including the last two as the 3-5 choice. Folks surely will line up to back him again Sunday, but with the outside post and a solid cast of opponents, he could very well find a way to get beat once more.
The featured event on Saturday’s nine-race program at Santa Anita is the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, and the undefeated 2-year-old champion SONGBIRD will look to remain perfect on her way towards the Kentucky Oaks. Unfortunately, her presence makes that race very unappealing from a wagering standpoint, as I have zero desire to attempt to beat her. While that race doesn’t appear very appetizing, there are a few spots where I believe a few bucks can be made.
RACE 2
That was a bizarre, and very fast, Pick last week where our very special choice, Big Red Rocket, got buried while trying to stalk the pacesetter then got caught at the wire and beat out for second by the one we didn’t like. Still, if you’d keyed him in the trifecta you got $23 back for a buck. Meanwhile, eleven other BreezeFigs maidens did their job well enough to win during the week. Two of those came at Santa Anita, where three of them completed a BreezeFigs exacta ($24) and trifecta ($182). Other winners ca
