BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, August 13th, 2016 by Bob Fierro and Jay Kilgore

Not much happened with our Pix last week although much to our surprise our “intriguing” Pick, Mr. Grey (Fr) actually went off the favorite in his race at Delaware and closed well to complete a paltry $6.60 (for $1) exacta with the second choice. The rest of the BreezeFigs 2-year-olds did well during the week with 13 of them breaking their maidens: Delaware, Del Mar (two), Gulfstream (two) Laurel (both races on the same day), Louisiana Downs (exacta), Monmouth, Parx (exacta), Prairie Meadows, and Saratoga (two).

Beer: Saratoga horses to watch for week of Aug. 8

KID PERFECT
Trainer: Ken McPeek
Last race: Aug. 6, 1st
Finish: 5th by 10
Beyer: 58
First-time starter was packed away at the back of the field along the hedge in race that was dominated on the front end. He came clear at the top of the stretch and put in a game run without threat.

Free: Del Mar horses to watch for week of Aug. 8

SCHILLAIRESS
Trainer: Peter Miller
Last race: Aug. 3, 5th
Finish: 3rd by 4
Beyer: 77
This N1X sprinter had a tough trip in this turf sprint, was bottled up behind runners inside, steadied at the quarter pole and into the lane. Might prefer a surface other than turf; follow in an N1X dirt sprint.

Gierkink: Woodbine horses to watch for week of Aug. 8

AFLEET DOLL

Trainer: Mike Wright

Last race: Aug. 6, 1st

Finish: 2nd by 1/2

After breaking inward and bumping with a rival, she ran a winning race first-time out in a five-furlong maiden special. This 2-year-old daughter of classic winner Afleet Alex is bred to run on.

Bernier: How I'll play Del Mar for Sunday, Aug. 7

Sunday's featured event at Del Mar is the $75,000 Osunitas for fillies and mares, and I'm particularly interested in one of the runners in there. I'll look to be alive to her in the payoff leg of a daily double consisting of races 6 and 7.

Illman: How I'll play Saratoga for Sunday, Aug. 7

Sunday's Saratoga card features the $100,000 Alydar Stakes at nine furlongs. Let’s take a crack at that field as well as a couple of other intriguing races.

Race 9

FAR FROM OVER (2) is undefeated from three starts for Todd Pletcher and showed no rust off a gigantic layoff in his seasonal debut at Belmont, but I want to see him back that race up in his first appearance at 1 1/8 miles against better horses. I wonder if he’s an underlay at something-to-five on the tote.

Peck: Mountaineer picks for Saturday, Aug. 6

Saturday's West Virginia Derby, the highlight of the Mountaineer meet, is part of the late Pick 4, and it's certainly a very playable sequence:

RACE 6: ROCKINN ON BYE closed deceptively well in his last try on the main track, two back. CANDIP is easy to like off that last Beyer. WILBO was a close third behind Candip. W. B. SMUDGE will be tough if he runs back to that figure he posted two back.

Free: How I'd Play Del Mar for Saturday, Aug. 6

New shooters arrive at Del Mar on Saturday. A well-bred filly makes her career debut, and an inconspicuous European shipper makes his U.S. debut. Both are prime plays.

First-time starter Lady Pamela debuts in race 6, a maiden sprint for fillies and mares. The imported Burgers and Fries is entered in race 9, the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap for 3-year-olds on turf. There are reasons to wager on both.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, August 6th, 2016 by Bob Fierro and Jay Kilgore

Our 2-year-old Pick made us look somewhat smart when Theory got in off the AE’s to gallop as a best-thing-ever at $3.30. Unfortunately, our upset choice, Port More, was not in the hunt—but another BreezeFigs horse, Reckling, whom we did not fancy, got up to complete a $20.60. Thank you very much, lucky star. The 3-year-old Pick, Conquest Neighpalm, stunk out the joint at Gulfstream.
