ARCADIA, Calif. – Pick-six bettors and front-running favorites have the same objective Friday at Santa Anita – to endure.

While bettors try to stay alive in a pick six that begins with a $53,993 carryover, Hobbits Hero and Curlin Rules hope to carry their speed in split divisions of a second-level allowance on turf.

A tough trip cost this N2X filly the win in a turf route. Amboselli raced three wide next to last, took up at the three-eighths pole when a rival shied, re-rallied inside, narrowed the gap late, and was likely best.

After breaking from the rail, he was shuffled back along the inside heading into the turn and then tried to make up ground on the promising runaway winner in a six-furlong maiden special for 2-year-olds.

The early pick four (races 2-5) on Sunday's Keeneland card looks intriguing.

RACE 2: WINKATDAWAT figures tough on the lead in his first start off the layoff, as he was against the race flow in each of his last two starts and now could be the controlling speed. AITUTAKI is the main pace threat and could get first run at the lone "A" play.

The colt with the filly name we liked last week, Comma Sister, did part of his job by completing a paltry $14 (for one buck) trifecta, while the other two finished up the track. The very good news is that there were 25 BreezeFigs maidens that won last week, plus three BreezeFigs horses that won stakes who were right there on the cards.

The top-class miler OBVIOUSLY may prove the linchpin in leg 2 (race 8), allowing you to spread to try to nail a price in the other competitive races. Of course, if you can beat him, well, then you’ll eliminate many tickets, so while he rates as your “A,” it seems silly to bank solely on him, as good as he is.

Breeders’ Cup preps abound, and trainer Chad Brown may prove the key to the first two legs.
