Jack Klugman, actor and racehorse owner, dead at 90

Jack Klugman, star of stage, screen, and television, and also a Thoroughbred owner, died Monday in Los Angeles at the age of 90, according to an Associated Press report. No cause was given for his death.

Klugman, an avid racing fan who was a long-time regular at Southern California tracks, was most noted in the Thoroughbred world as the owner of Jaklin Klugman, a modestly bred colt who finished a close third in the 1980 Kentucky Derby, defeated just two lengths by the filly Genuine Risk. He was then a well-beaten fourth in the Preakness behind Codex.

Northwest star Class Included sold and headed to Romans barn in Florida

Class Included, who has spent most of her career in the Pacific Northwest, has been sold and will be shipped to Florida to train.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The popular Northwest-based filly Class Included, one-two at Emerald Downs and Hastings Park in the first 16 starts of her career before she met her match in the Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita, has changed hands and is headed to Florida.

Owner-breeder Michael Feuerborn confirmed Friday that Class Included had been sold for an undisclosed amount and will ship to Florida where she will be trained by Dale Romans.

Class Included was purchased by the Brittlyn Racing stable of Evelyn Benoit, who owned the recently retired Louisiana-bred Star Guitar.

Kentucky Derby and Kentucky Oaks future wager dates set

Churchill Downs on Thursday announced the 2013 dates for its Kentucky Derby Future Wager and Kentucky Oaks Future Wager weekends.

Three pools will be offered for the Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Feb. 8-10, which is 12 weeks before the $2 million Kentucky Derby on May 4; March 1-3, nine weeks out; and March 22-24, six weeks before the race. This will be the 15th straight year that Churchill has offered future betting on the Derby.

Prohibition of corticosteroids within 72 hours of race recommended

A racing-medication policy group has approved recommendations on corticosteroid use that would prohibit the administration of one of the most popular of the anti-inflammatory drugs within 72 hours of a race and also ban joint injections of the drugs within seven days of a race, the group announced on Thursday.

California racing board to consider changing rules for Lasix administration

The California Horse Racing Board will consider amending its rules regarding the administration of the anti-bleeding medication furosemide, commonly known as Lasix, to have raceday shots given by state or track veterinarians, rather than private vets, according to a 45-day notice the racing board posted this week.

In addition, the rule would mandate that furosemide would be the only bleeder medication that could be used for racing.

Ellis Park to host $300,000 handicapping tournament in 2013

Ellis Park in western Kentucky will host a $300,000 handicapping tournament next year over Labor Day weekend with the vast majority of the 55 seats for the contest provided through online tournaments held earlier in the year, the track and tournament organizers said Monday.

The $300,000 purse would make the tournament the third-richest currently on the calendar, behind the National Handicapping Championship, which in 2012 awarded more than $1.5 million in prize money, and the $10,000 buy-in Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, which earlier this year distributed $370,000 in purses.

Mel Stute remains hospitalized, but making progress

Retired trainer Mel Stute is expected to be hospitalized at least through the middle of the week, and perhaps until the weekend, while recovering from a head injury sustained in a fall at his home on Dec. 8.

Gary Stute, the trainer’s son and a trainer himself, said his father is undergoing physical therapy.

“They’ve got him in rehab and trying to strengthen him up,” Gary Stute said on Sunday afternoon. “My sister said he can walk without a walker, but he has trouble getting up.
