Q&A: Dale Romans reflects on his banner 2012 season

Dale Romans enjoyed the best season of a 27-year training career in 2012, with Grade 1 winners such as Shackleford, Dullahan, Little Mike, and Tapitsfly. Focusing on Keeneland, Churchill Downs, Saratoga, and Gulfstream Park, Romans won 125 races last year for stable earnings of more than $11.8 million, a career high. He also was honored with the Big Sport of Turfdom Award by the Turf Publicists of America last month in Arizona.

Advisory group recommends lowering takeout, improvements to Aqueduct

A racing-fan advisory group to the New York Racing and Wagering Board has recommended that the state’s racetracks lower takeouts, improve their racing facilities, and allow the return of reserved- and box-seat tickets at Saratoga Racecourse for potential resale, according to a report released on Wednesday.

Midwest Thoroughbreds, Pletcher, and Dominguez among 2012 leaders

Ramon Dominguez set a record for jockey earnings in 2012 with over $25 million.

There were familiar names at the top of the list of the nation’s leading owners, trainers and jockeys for earnings in 2012.

The Midwest Thoroughbreds operation of Richard Papiese, trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Ramon Dominguez led their respective categories, repeating their accomplishments from 2011.

Midwest Thoroughbreds had 2012 earnings of $10,150,498, with 542 wins from 1,857 starters. In 2011, Midwest Thoroughbreds had seasonal earnings of $6,307,278, with 418 wins.

Midwest’s win total also led the standings and was more than triple the next closest owner.

Stud Muffin retired, headed to Akindale Farm

Stud Muffin, a popular stakes-winning New York-bred gelding, was retired from racing after being purchased privately by a group that included prominent Thoroughbred owner Maggi Moss.

The 8-year-old gelding was shipped on Saturday morning from Belmont Park to Akindale Farm in Pawling, N.Y., where Stud Muffin will take up residence alongside the likes of multiple stakes winner Evening Attire, his brother Tacticianor, Callmetony, and the stakes winner Hotstufanthensome.

Aqueduct, Charles Town, Penn National cancel Saturday cards

The New York Racing Association canceled its nine-race program at Aqueduct Racetrack on Saturday as a winter storm approached the New York city area Saturday morning. The storm was expected to bring snow and rain to a wide section of the Northeast, according to the National Weather Center. Aqueduct will be open for simulcast wagering on Saturday and is scheduled for live racing on Sunday.

Eclipse Awards: Goldberg, Simon, Keyser win writing, photography honors

Ryan Goldberg, a freelance writer, was named the 2012 recipient for the Eclipse Award for Writing in the Feature/Commentary category for an article on Eibar and Keiber Coa that appeared in the Daily Racing Form in July, the organizers of the Eclipse Awards announced Friday, the same day that two other media winners were announced.

Trainers Broberg, Miyadi denied Stud Book privileges following medication violations

Trainers Karl M. Broberg and Steven Miyadi will be denied all privileges of the American Stud Book for one year as punishment for multiple medication violations, the first such ruling of its type, The Jockey Club reported Thursday.

Denial of privileges includes the ability to register foals, including foals born in 2013, or submit any documents related to the registration process for any Thoroughbred. Broberg’s and Miyadi’s penalties are effective Jan. 1, 2013.
