New York Racing Association sued for negligence by horse owner

An owner of a filly who was euthanized last summer at Belmont Park is suing the New York Racing Association for negligent actions he believes contributed to the fatal injuries the horse sustained during the running of a race.

Jacob Haddad is seeking damages “in excess of $500,000” for NYRA’s failure to put in place adequate safety protocols that he believes contributed to the death of the 3-year-old filly Salsa Mambo in the ninth race on the July 15 closing-day card at Belmont.

Game's young talent deserves celebration with apprentice prize

I have read and heard of some people's desire to abolish the Eclipse Award for apprentice riders, as reflected in the Jan. 12 letter to the Racing Form, "Eclipse rider comes to defense of apprentice award," by the 1981 recipient, Richard Migliore.

Let's not be too harsh on the apprentice riders of today. They are victimized by circumstance.

NYRA considers cutback to inner-track racing schedule

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – A reduction to a four-day race week and a cutback to eight races per day during Aqueduct’s winter meet as well as the replacement of Aqueduct’s inner track with a synthetic surface will all be considered at next Friday’s meeting of the New York Racing Association Reorganization Board, it was announced Thursday afternoon.

These measures, as well as others, are in response to the four racing fatalities that occurred during the first 16 days of the inner track season. There has not been a racing fatality since Jan. 10.
