Horsemen on Twitter find faster, better way to engage fans

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Ken McPeek is among the most active tweeters among horsemen. "Every media person doesn’t have to call me and ask their questions if they’re following what I’m saying," he said. "It makes my world easier."

Frac Daddy entered the Holy Bull Stakes on Jan. 26 at Gulfstream Park as a promising 3-year-old colt who had finished second in the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in his last start at age 2. Horseplayers bet him to 5-1 in the Holy Bull, but his backers never even got a thrill: Frac Daddy finished a flat, distant sixth.

Aqueduct: Gyarmati takes academic approach to training

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Leah Gyarmati runs Smooth Bert in Saturday’s Withers. Before becoming a trainer, she studied philosophy and earned a Master’s in theology.

It’s been a long time since Leah Gyarmati gave up doctoral studies for a life at the racetrack, but she admits there are still some things she misses about academia.

“I loved arguing,” she said this week from her home near Belmont Park. “I’m pretty opinionated.”

Although she rarely engages in philosophical discussion these days, Gyarmati, 48, has found that life on the racetrack offers plenty of opportunities for debate, perhaps most frequently with herself.

Shanghai Bobby tops Experimental Free Handicap at 126 pounds

Tom Keyser
Shanghai Bobby is the exemplar of 2-year-old form for the 2013 Derby, with a clean slate in five starts.

Shanghai Bobby, unbeaten at age 2 and the Eclipse Award-winning 2-year-old male of 2012, on Wednesday was given top weight of 126 pounds in the Experimental Free Handicap, a weight-based ranking of the previous year’s 2-year-olds put out annually by The Jockey Club.

The Experimental weights are based on a theoretical race at 1 1/16 miles on dirt, the exact conditions of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, which Shanghai Bobby won to complete a 5-for-5 season. He also won the Champagne and Hopeful.

Ultimate Eagle has three graded stakes victories to his credit, most recently the 1 1/8-mile Strub on dirt.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Ultimate Eagle will ship to Florida for a bigger purse and greater prestige than offered in California, while the 2013 debut of Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner Calidoscopio has been postponed.

Neither horse will run Sunday in the Grade 2, $200,000 San Antonio Stakes at Santa Anita, which early this week was shaping up as a virtual walkover for Game On Dude.

Eclipse for owner an unjust snub of vital outfit

I am dumbfounded by both the process and by the voters who voted Godolphin as Eclipse Award winner for leading owner of 2012.

What are the criteria to win this award? I looked at the statistics on Equibase, and Godolphin shouldn't have even been a finalist. In 2012, in North America, Godolphin won a grand total of 15 races for $3,749,075. So 15 wins makes for leading owner in North America?
