Thoroughbred Racing Associations elects Remington executive as president

Scott Wells, the president and general manager of Remington Park, was elected president of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations, a racetrack trade group, on Tuesday, the organization announced.
 
Wells, a former trainer who has been on the business side of racing since 1990, will succeed Chris McErlean, the vice president of racing at Penn National Gaming Inc., for a two-year term. Wells was elected by the TRA membership at a board meeting on Tuesday.

Illinois governor vetoes expanded gaming bill

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday vetoed an expanded gaming bill that would have brought slot machines to racetracks, but the governor’s action was universally expected and may have little bearing on the current state of gaming expansion in the Illinois legislature.

Zito to serve 15-day suspension for clenbuterol positive

Trainer Nick Zito will begin serving a 15-day suspension next Monday as a result of a positive test for clenbuterol from a horse that won at Aqueduct on Feb. 24.

Joe Cain, Kentucky trainer, dies after battle with ALS

Joe Cain, a longtime Kentucky-based trainer whose career highlight came at Saratoga in 2003 when he sent out Private Horde to a five-length victory in the Grade 2 Alfred G. Vanderbilt Stakes, died Saturday night at his home in Russell Springs, Ky., after suffering for 2 1/2 years from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Field closes as 3-1 favorite; Flashy Gray tops Kentucky Oaks futures

Verrazano was 9-1 heading into the final day of wagering for Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field closed as a clear-cut choice over the top individually listed option, Verrazano, when Pool 2 of the 2013 Kentucky Derby Future Wager closed Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern.

The field, the 24th or “all others” option, closed as the 3-1 favorite, with Verrazano next at 8-1. They were followed by Vyjack (11-1), Orb (12-1), Flashback (12-1), Itsmyluckyday (13-1), Revolutionary (15-1), Shanghai Bobby (16-1), Normandy Invasion (17-1), and Super Ninety Nine (17-1).

Well, here we go again! The finalists for the Hall of Fame's class of 2013 came out ("Borel, Antley among finalists for Hall of Fame," March 1) and there is one trainer on the list. Only one problem, though. The trainer's name isn't John Campo, Billy Turner, or Jose Martin.

Kentucky Derby Future Wager: Field 8-5 Pool 2 favorite as Saturday wagering begins

At the close of wagering on Friday, Verrazano, at 10-1, was second choice to the 8-5 field in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The mutuel field was bet down to clear-cut favoritism after the first full day of wagering in Pool 2 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, leaving all 23 of the separately listed wagering choices at double-digit odds.

After wagering on Friday, the first of three days for Pool 2, the field – the 24th or “all others” option – was the 8-5 favorite, with Verrazano next at 10-1. He was closely followed by Flashback, Itsmyluckyday, and Orb, all at 12-1, and then Revolutionary (13-1), Super Ninety Nine (18-1), and Shanghai Bobby (20-1).

Breeders' Cup will not expand Lasix ban, drops Juvenile Sprint

A ban on the raceday use of the anti-bleeding medication furosemide will not be expanded to all of the races at this year’s Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., and the Juvenile Sprint will be dropped from the lineup, the organization announced on Friday.
