Los Alamitos withdraws offer to expand track for Thoroughbreds

Los Alamitos withdrew an offer Tuesday to expand its racetrack to accommodate Thoroughbred racing and training beginning in 2014, citing disagreements with the California Thoroughbred Trainers over the proposed racetrack expansion and a desire to avoid a showdown with Fairplex Park on acquiring racing dates.

Brad McKinzie, a consultant with Los Alamitos, said Tuesday that track owner Ed Allred could resume discussions about an expansion, if Thoroughbred industry officials deem the Fairplex Park proposal unsatisfactory.

Titletown Five has made one start this year following knee surgery and will run in Saturday's Louisiana Derby.

Titletown Five’s star has fallen over the past several weeks. Although part of the mutuel field in the first pool of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager, Titletown Five made the cut in the second leg due to his encouraging juvenile form and early season workouts.

After losing as the 11-10 favorite in his seasonal reappearance, the $60,000 Gazebo Stakes going six furlongs at Oaklawn Park on March 2, Titletown Five was dismissed at 70-1 in the second future wager and was removed as an individual entity from the third pool altogether.

The racing board approved rules for exchange wagering in November 2012, and sent documents to the Office of Administrative Law earlier this year for legal review. That office rejected the rules earlier this month, but has yet to publish its findings.
