For the connections of many of the top contenders, the answer as of Monday afternoon was no.
With 73 qualifying races spanning 10 countries, each of the 15 Breeders’ Cup divisions have Breeders' Cup Challenge races. And a win gets a horse more than just an invitation. The Breeders’ Cup pays entry fees and provides travel allowances for the connections of the Challenge winners if they are nominated to the Breeders’ Cup program by October 22nd.
ARCADIA, Calif. – The first three finishers from the Wood Memorial all are set to head to Kentucky, and quite soon, but the Santa Anita Derby might have the victorious Goldencents as its lone representative in the May 4 Kentucky Derby, the result of injuries to two top West Coast contenders both before and after the Santa Anita Derby.

ARCADIA, Calif.- Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer moved past King Leatherbury into sole possession of fourth place on the list of all-time winningest trainers on Sunday when Kate’s Event rallied from off the pace to win the eighth race at Santa Anita.
The 6-year-old Kate’s Event gave Hollendorfer the 6,376th win of his career. He added another an hour later when Our Cognac Kid won the ninth race at Golden Gate Fields.
ARCADIA, Calif. - The board of directors of the Thoroughbred Owners of California has scheduled an emergency meeting at Santa Anita on Thursday to discuss the uncertainty surrounding the 2014 racing schedule and future stabling issues at Southern California tracks.
At a 90-minute open forum on Sunday, TOC chairman Mike Pegram said the TOC has significant reservations about methods to finance a proposed expansion of Barretts Racing at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.
Dennis Patterson, who began training horses in the 1950s and has been a Northern California fixture since 1966, died at his home in San Mateo, Calif., at age 77 on Thursday night.
Patterson, who had battled back from repeated bouts of pneumonia, died of natural causes, said his son, Dennis Jr., a jockey agent.
“His body just gave out,” said Patterson of his father. “He was at home, and we were all there with him.”
Less than one week after Team Valor and trainer Graham Motion appeared in the winner’s circle of the Dubai World Cup at Meydan Racecourse with Animal Kingdom, the ownership group and the trainer announced Friday that they have agreed to end their business relationship, with trainer Rick Mettee set to take over Team Valor’s horses at the start of May.

1. The 1938 Santa Anita Derby was filled with stories from top to bottom.
The winner, Stagehand, became the first and only horse to capture the Santa Anita Derby and Handicap in the same year. The conditions of the Big Cap were changed to 4-year-olds and up in 1970, making Stagehand’s record one likely to remain.
California’s involvement in the Kentucky Derby traces back a long way. Elias J. “Lucky” Baldwin, whose Rancho Santa Anita encompassed much of the San Gabriel Valley and who built the first Santa Anita Park in 1907, finished fourth in the 1886 Kentucky Derby with his colt Lijero.
In 1904, Elwood won the 30th running of the Kentucky Derby after having run 17 times in California that winter and spring, including finishing second in the inaugural Ascot Derby at Ascot Park, just outside of Los Angeles.
